Quoting: TcheyI don't believe a Linux console is a solution for Linux gamers. I don't know about you, but around me, me included, all Linux users are doing much more than playing, on their PC.

It's a workstation for video, music, 3D, development, internet, social media door, games, all together, and if there was a Linux console, they would NOT buy it or use it even for free. It would require a split between the PC and the console, while with the PC they have all in one machine.
I still think a Linux console would be a very big win for Linux gamers. Lots of computing software these days are browser based. People use Google documents and email and music, etc. You can use the good browsers on Linux no problem. So, if the majority of highly advertised games ran on Linux, then I do think PC gamers would be more apt to running Linux on their PC's instead of Windows. The rest of the stuff they do on their computers wouldn't even be a shift.

If you look at the thumbnail to this article with your peripheral vision, it looks like a hand going down the back of someone's pants.

The light flare in the first picture does look sort of harsh but also pretty realistic.

Heard of BatMUD? This classic text-based multiplayer game is still going after many years

I only tried a MUD once around 15 years ago. I couldn't understand the appeal at the time. But also at the time, I much preferred action games to RPG's. I never enjoyed finishing an RPG until college. Nowadays, RPG's are basically the only single-player game type I'll play. I've also very much enjoyed reading books for the past several years whereas I hated reading books when I was younger.

I've never heard of BatMUD, but after reading that little snippet in the screenshot, I'm pretty interested! I am going to try it out. :)

It's very rare that I'll re-buy a super old game, but I might get this one. I really liked playing it with my friends long ago, and I don't think we ever completed it.

Quoting: GuestUsing swap is not up to the game, it's up to the Linux kernel...
Feel free to look into how they're handling malloc. My system freezes before even half my swap space is used up.
malloc() is not the lowest level anyway, mmap() is. They use jemalloc, and we use the standard glibc allocator.

Thats irrelevant anyway, because your app doesnt SEE swap.. your app simply requests memory, and its up to the kernel whether to page in/out sections of your app. You could try experimenting with /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
That makes sense. I'll look into that. Someday, I'll upgrade to 16 GB, but it's only 3 games out of my 100+ that need it.

I love my Linux/GNU OS. When Windows 7 loses support in 2020, I'll pull the plug. I don't see any reason to pull the plug on PS4 games. I only buy games for it that aren't on Linux. Plus, consoles are the only games you can resell these days. If you buy a console game at full price, you can sell it and buy a used game, then do the same at least one more time. You can't do that with PC games anymore. In fact, because I can't resell PC games, I never pay full price. I will only buy them when they're really cheap because I have to commit to owning it forever even if I play through a short campaign one time in my life.

I also don't use my PC solely for gaming. Gaming isn't the only reason I love it. I would say I am an enthusiast but not a zealot. And yes, I'll play MMO's in WINE when my Windows is gone. (FWIW, I don't even have WINE installed right now.)

Quoting: 14Since I already own the game and my Windows friends set their games to the legacyports version, I'm just happy to get our games patched up. :) The only problem I have is the game wants more than my 8 GB of RAM, so I have to make sure my swap is on... and the game doesn't gracefully switch to using swap when it needs it.
