And don't forget that there is a demo!

Ubuntu 23.04 is out now with GNOME 44 and a stable Steam Snap

I feel like Liam fell out of love with Ubuntu because this article sounded very matter-of-fact. :)

It is great they did something to improve the Steam and GPU driver disadvantages Ubuntu had forever.

Linux and Steam Deck game manager Lutris has a fresh Beta out

Quoting: GroganI've been using it (from git) since they added the ability to use Proton runners from Steam (it finds the Steam runtime now). It doesn't find my custom ones in compatibilitytools.d without a little help though (a symlink in steamapps/commom -> ../../compatibilitytools.d/protondirname) but it works.
I am still on the main release, and when I want to launch a game through Lutris with Proton (like Spellforce 3), I use GE Proton. Works great. You just have to make sure you download the one that is made to be launched outside of Steam.

Happy to see Lutris still getting love after all these years! I haven't tried Heroic yet, so I rely on Lutris for a handful of games.

System76 launch multiple new powerful Linux laptops

Quoting: Purple Library GuyIt's nice that they're putting out powerful Linux laptops.
But, could somebody maybe do a wimpy Linux laptop? That's more what I'm in the market for.
RIP netbooks. Something along those lines would make a great (and, for my purposes, much more useful) alternative to Chromebooks in this day and age!
My wife manages OK with a Chromebook most of the time because her computing needs are very modest. But when she wants to do something it doesn't want to do, she's basically hooped. If MacOS is a "walled garden", ChromeOS is a "walled planter"!
I would avoid ARM for your use-case for the time being. Maybe the story will change in another 7-10 years.

So that leaves us with what everyone has been doing a long time now: buy an old but gold laptop off eBay and put a new battery in it. When the thin Thinkpads (X Elite?) were new many years ago, they were the envy of many co-workers. The screen was touch capable and you could fold it in the open position.

Dota 2: The New Frontiers Update is out and it's huge
21 April 2023 at 9:31 pm UTC

I had succumbed to the idea that I don't spend enough time in Dota 2 to get good enough to enjoy it anymore, so I've had updates on pause in Steam and only update it before big tournaments so I can watch them within the game client. I've turned spectator only. However, I will have to try these new changes!

What timing! I only just got my feet wet in deck builders over the past two weeks. I don't think I've found a favorite yet. If progression feels awful each time you have to reset, it's a huge turn-off for me... coming from someone who enjoys a good campaign and story with a beginning, middle, and end (the final objective). When I don't reach the end, it feels like I'm writing a script, banging my head against the keyboard, and never have a breakthrough. What suckiness! In real life, you eventually have a breakthrough or come up with an alternative way to achieve your objectives... or you settle on a 2nd choice.

It helps if I put myself in a mindset of a physical card game -- something you play repeatedly and are never really done forever. It's not like you "beat the game" and move. But in a physical card game, you can lose or you can win. It's different than losing over and over and over.

I don't know. I'm still trying it out and a little wishy-washy as you can tell.

Ubuntu 23.04 'Lunar Lobster' Beta released
8 April 2023 at 6:28 am UTC

I still have my same old opinion that I'm glad Ubuntu exists for other people.

I don't even download Ubuntu ISO's to play with in a VM anymore. Other distributions are much more interesting. What I play with lately:

Fedora Kinoite
KaOS
Pop!
Mint
ElementaryOS
RebornOS

(Yeah, Manjaro is not on my short list anymore either.)

What my real systems use:
Arch
EndeavourOS

It looks cute. If I had a Deck, I'd be tempted.

Monster collecting fusion game Cassette Beasts releasing in April

Couch MP only, hmm... well, I'll try the demo. Looks somewhat interesting. I never was into Pokemon style games tbh.
