I can vaguely see how that'd make sense for a survival game. You're tossed into a situation with nothing (not even clothes, it seems?) and have to make the best of it. A mismatch would be mitigated to some extent by the knowledge that nobody else got to pick their sex either, and that they likewise know there was no element of self-expression in your non-choice. (That doesn't mean I wouldn't much rather create my own character...)
