Quantum mechanics-based puzzle game The Long Gate launches in September
20 Aug 2020 at 2:29 pm UTC Likes: 2

At first I thought "oh no, not another quantum game that completely misrepresents quantum mechanics", but then I read the description, and the term "quantum circuit" caught my attention. This might actually be an accurate representation!

Even better:
Nearly all of The Long Gate’s puzzles are based on real world technologies, and it contains accurate depictions of quantum circuits and a 4-bit quantum computer, verified by scientists at D-Wave Systems, the world’s first commercial quantum computer company.
While the commercial chips of D-Wave are iirc not using quantum circuits (but rather quantum annealing), their engineers certainly know how those things work.

Become ferrymaster to the deceased, Spiritfarer is out now

Quoting: RoosterThe animation style gives me Battle Chef vibes. I doubt it's as good, but still.. Might check it out at some point.
Played both, and Spiritfarer's animations are certainly at least as good.
The demo is on GoG for free, so there's nothing stopping you from judging them yourself: https://www.gog.com/game/spiritfarer_demo [External Link]

And a word of warning: I made the mistake and bought the game for console. Do yourself a favor and get the PC version. The console version uses the same fonts as the PC build, which are barely readable when not sitting directly in front of the screen.

I dug out the very first PC game my parents bought for me: The Settlers 2. 24 years after release it's still an incredibly awesome game, and of all Settlers games I've played it's still my absolute favourite (though it might be the nostalgia talking ). Runs perfectly fine in Dosbox.
Apart from that I've been playing Death and Taxes, and while it's fun, it lacks a bit of challenge.

Care for spirits of the deceased in Spiritfarer, new teaser released plus Stadia confirmed

Couldn't care less about Stadia, but Switch was announced as well - I might just play this game on console. I can't say why, but the game's demo gave me quite a "Nintendo feel"...

Vulnerability found in GRUB2 bootloader, nicknamed ‘BootHole’, compromising Secure Boot

Quoting: scaineI think the irony is that it's meant to be "secure". Also, it was touted by MS for consumer laptops for "security" reasons, but in reality, putting the marketing BS aside, it just made Linux harder to install. This further solidified (as if that was needed) their monopoly on consumer O/S hardware.
Ah… nope. That's BS. Sorry :) There is more to UEFI.

I can agree on that not everybody needs this.
The complaint was not about UEFI in general, but about the Secure Boot feature. The idea behind Secure Boot is not stupid, but that Microsoft is the only trusted issuer for keys is at least questionable from a market perspective.
(I am well aware that all UEFI implementations should allow custom trusted keys to be added, but let's be honest: How many mainboards ship with firmware that really exposes this, and how many users even know about that feature?)

What play button have you been clicking on lately?

I dug out KSP once more.
Started playing and decided that my 1.10 install was still looking dull. Then I installed Scatterer and EVE and started messing with Scatterer's shaders to maybe improve performance. After reading through a lot of code and trying out a few things, I must say, the performance improvements I managed to get are all pretty negligible. Respect to the mod's developer, the atmosphere shaders are as far as I can tell pretty well optimized.

VKD3D-Proton is the new official Direct3D 12 to Vulkan layer for Proton

Quoting: MayeulCWow, I had missed the original piece of news. This was a saddening moment, but that person has my respects. Kudos on Valve for picking the baton up :)

Quoting: aufkrawallCan anybody tell whether it will be possible to completely avoid any additional shader compile stutter vs. native D3D12?
IIRC (I might be wrong on this one) Windows game ship with precompiled shaders for common GPUs, so we're quite far from this. Fossilize and Steam's distributed shader cache should help a whole lot (also on windows if/when it's there)
Afaik games ship the shaders for D3D in a hardware independent intermediate language, and the final compilation is done by the graphics drivers. However GPU vendors tend to supply precompiled (and sometimes even manually optimized) shader binaries for popular games along with their drivers.

Quoting: 14The amount of 3D games is sad.
Games don't need to be "3D" to be fun.
Ladies don't have to be pretty for you to fall in love with them.
Food doesn't have to be tasty to eat it.
Bed doesn't have to be comfortable to be slept in.(as, in jail for example)
We have a saying in German: "Nicht alles was hinkt ist ein Vergleich."
It describes your posting perfectly. The best English translation I can come up with is "not everything lopsided is a comparison".

The thing that makes games fun is the gameplay. Graphics is a way to present gameplay to the user. If the gameplay works better in 3D, the game has to be 3D. If the gameplay works better in 2D, the game should be made in 2D (or 2.5D).

3D alone does not make a game fun. Think about No Man's Sky for instance. Many people consider that game to be the epitome of boredom (btw: I don't).
Another example is the GTA series. The first titles were 2D and when the first 3D title was made, the gameplay has changed along with the graphics, because the old 2D gameplay wouldn't fit well into a believable 3D city.

Quoting: EhvisAs someone with an aerospace engineering background, I should really put more time into this game than I have. Ok, where to fit this in the todo list. :dizzy:
Whoa, you will probably love the Ferram Aerospace Research [External Link] mod (the author is no longer active, but there's a fork [External Link] for recent KSP versions).
