System Shock Pre-Alpha Demo now available on Linux, nearing stretch goal
17 Jul 2016 at 7:35 am UTC

Quoting: Comandante oardoWell... I have an average of 40FPS with a GTX 960 and a core i5 4690K at 1080p on Ubuntu 14.04.3 64bit...
Very bad optimized game...

The game even close by itself..

Any one of You know if there are log files?
It crashed to desktop for me too, both times when entering the dark area after picking up the energy weapon. Digging for logs now myself.

[Edit] Found a bunch of guys on the Steam discussions [External Link] having the very same crash happening to them across multiple configurations and operating systems in roughly the same area.

But I like the style and hope stability improves after the alpha. I played System Shock 2 extensively, but the first one never managed to hold my attention for more than a few hours, so I am looking forward to experience Citadel Station this time.

Dear Valve and Steam Machines OEMs, you have it all wrong

I'd like to see Valve produce small quantities of reference designs, probably in different performance categories. Then OEMs could pick their choices and pump out larger batches with slight(!) modifications.

Another piece of the puzzle would be some kind of benchmark built into Steam. Somewhat like the Windows Experience Index this KPI could be used to rank the different Steam Machine editions and would be added to every new release to the Steam shop.

It's something that really baffles me: the industry has failed to come up with some kind of globally accepted "will it run on my rig" system. Every piece of entertainment software should list its dependencies and requirements in a standardized matter, so a simple check app could tell you if your home equipment is capable to run anything you'd like to throw at it.

The latest Steam Hardware Survey shows a rather insignificant drop for Linux

Quoting: SnevStrange while actually this has happened: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/07/linux-marketshare-reaches-2-percent [External Link]
I was about to quote the same netmarketshare report and point out that it took roughly 8 years to double the market share. Let's see how the trend will work out after the free but forced Win10 migration wave.

Btw: I just spotted Liam down in the comments on OMG Ubuntu ;)

Check out this AMD video talking about Vulkan (and DirectX12)

It is really sad that id never got around to officially port Doom 3 and Rage, so I doubt they will port the new Doom as well. I was wishing for the spirit of John Carmack to carry on at id, making them release source for example. And as pointed out yet again in this video: Vulkan support is enabled already, so the graphics department is most likely not the driving factor that keeps them from supporting other platforms.

The future of the Friday Livestream and my other GOL work

OK, after a brief shock I realized this is just an away message for an unusual duration.

In the words of PTerry: Mind how you go!

Operator Overload, a fantastic looking puzzle game with a ton of levels needs help on Steam Greenlight
22 Jun 2016 at 3:39 pm UTC

I fail to make sense what the puzzle will be about based on this trailer and the screenshots and description on their Greenlight page.

Sure, I like the clean visuals, but in my opinion potential supporters could be more willing to get on board if they knew what you are supposed to do in the game.

Script your own AI in the MMO RTS game Screeps
21 Jun 2016 at 7:47 pm UTC

I really like the idea, but I'm not so sure about being thrown into the melting pot of MMO mayhem right after the tutorial. I'd like to be able to explore the game without much threat first, building a library of functions and strategies. Sure, they have a sandbox on their page, but I'd prefer some kind of staged progression. Like: once you beat certain goals you may advance to more difficult terrain and face off against other players who managed to get that far. Essentially my fear is you will encounter a number of high level players with well established AI routines right off the bat.

Let's wait for the reviews on the planned local hosted worlds.

What are you playing this weekend?

Gave [Gladiabots](https://gfx47.itch.io/gladiabots) a try and it was a blast! And while I was finishing up the last missions of the alpha, the author announced multiplayer is working now [External Link].

Spent the rest of the week replaying The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past in ZSNES. Just stopped at the mega bomb, close to the end. Next up will be Twilight Princess in Dolphin, then Wind Waker HD and Skyward Sword on Wii U. Most probably Link's Awakening and Hour Glass after that. Keeping my Zelda skills up in preparation for Breath of the Wild next year ;)

Titan Quest RPG could see a Linux version in future

Titan Quest was great because of the dual class system, the fresh mythology for computer action rpgs and the LAN option for endless co-op fun.

Olden but golden.
