Editorial: Valve have not abandoned SteamOS or Linux, things are looking pretty good

Has anyone calculated the rate of new titles released for SteamOS over the last 6 to 24 months compared to other gaming platforms? I think MS, Sony and Nintendo are wetting their pants right now. Well, maybe not, but things are looking pretty good for Linux as a gaming platform.

Regarding converting other people: I have two co-workers make the switch just because of the annoying Win10 upgrade ads on their Windows machines. One of them did not even try it out before, now it's 3 weeks and counting.

The Steam VR support for Linux hiding in the shadows is a real shame, although I guess it's because of shortcomings on the driver side that has lead them to that decision. Considering the tendency to make Linux run on almost any tech out there I don't worry in the long run though. It just takes some time for the HowTo's to get written ;)

Thanks for the heads up on threaded optimizations and the openGL4 parameter, I never understood why the autodetect option always turned every gfx option to "low"... now it looks nice and is performing as expected!

But maybe I got another stupid question: How do I enable the launcher on linux? I'd like to check out the marketplace and some of those maps advertised in the quick challenge menu.

Quoting: psyminI'm glad it is on Steam now. This is an odd game. IIRC you can host your own server freely.

If you make content for it, however, the "official" server can use it and profit from it .. again this is from memory so might not be current info.
Not sure about self hosting, but I think I remember you could design your own instances, including quests and NPC actions and share them with the community. That open scripting of world internals is in contrast to the personal user interface scripting available in the better popular MMOs out there.

I'm intimidated to give it a spin and check how populated the servers really are after all those years.

This only works if you have the game for a different platform in your library already.

Steam Controller on Linux part 2, more thoughts & more issues

I am still waiting for the day when you don’t have to use Big Picture for it
Wait a sec, does the steam controller only "work" in Big Picture, or do you only need Big Picture to setup the device like advertised on the shop page?

Requirements
A Steam Machine or other computer capable of running Steam Big Picture Mode, in order to view, edit, save, and share Steam Controller mappings.
If it really requires you to run BP just to use the controller on a game, that sounds like a stupid thing to start with.

As far as I know there is no official support for Linux (or SteamOS) yet. The steam shop page advertises the Vive as Windows only, the benchmarking software is only available for Windows and threads on their own forums concerning Linux support are without official replies.

And the grafx drivers situation on Linux might be part of the reasoning behind not presenting a happy Tux icon as well.

I had my hopes high for the Vive, but they are putting my faith on tough tests it seems.

This reminds me of Spore. And Spore had to endure the dark age of walking phallus monsters, it never really recovered from that ;)
