Quoting: SolitaryWhat's with the gatekeeping? So basically what they are saying they don't want EAC to support any other platforms but Windows, so they won't use it and hope Proton/Linux to fail... so it doesn't take away from EAC Windows resources. What a twisted logic. It's connected with Tim Sweeney's bizarre fear mongering about his own product. They updated EAC to support Linux but then Sweeney came out saying it was less effective/secure on Linux. Regardless I think it's unacceptable how intrusive these anticheat systems are getting. I don't think their purpose warrants the level of risk they open up for surveillance and malware.

Is something preventing Valve from making a Steam Remote Play client for Oculus Quest? The experience on both Windows and Linux for connecting to SteamVR on PC is just awful. On Windows you have to run through Oculus' zombified PC interface, and on Linux you have to do some Android dev mode trickery, though at least the path takes you straight to SteamVR. If there was just an official Steam app for Quest that established a wireless PC connection, it could actually be good!

Quoting: Doc AngeloI wonder when the first PS4 emulators will show up. As the PS4 (and the XBox One) is pretty much 99% a standard computer, it shouldn't be too hard to pull that off. At least there would be very little actual hardware emulation needed.Oddly enough, this was true on the original 2004 Xbox, and there's still no good PC emulator (or compatibility layer). Hundreds of Blinx the Cat fans are praying their Xbox never dies.

Are you one of many shiphands controlling one large ship, or is it one ship per player?
Interview with Timothee Besset, formerly of id Software, who helped port Rocket League to Linux

Thanks for the interview. I was definitely interested in the discussion of SteamOS as a long term bet. This isn't news, but it's good to hear there's still some kind of plan in effect.
I see two major issues with the SteamOS/linux initiative right now:
#1: Major publishers are not onboard. EA, Activision, most regrettably Bethesda have released 0 games for Linux. Obviously EA and Blizzard favor their own distribution platforms on Windows, but neither shows any sign of bringing those platforms to Linux either as competition or in cooperation with Valve+Steam. Bethesda is alarming because they're really a PC-first company. All their games are best on Windows. They generally implement Steam's apis in their games. And in particular DOOM seems totally ready for a Linux port being OpenGL+Vulkan on Windows. It's unbelievable that there's no discussion of Linux or even Mac builds of Doom at the moment.
#2: HTC Vive is Windows only. VR is held back by Windows. Users want to turn the thing on and get into a game. Windows throws up too many hurdles to a smooth Vive experience. SteamOS could be the plug-and-play solution, but Valve hasn't made it a priority for some reason. VR developers aren't talking about SteamOS/Linux at all. To me this is the most worrying evidence against SteamOS right now.

Generally I think splash screens are a step in the wrong direction. How does this look for SteamOS users? I've already switched to Linux as my main platform for Rocket League (over PS4 and Windows).

Here's my wishful thinking version:
Cyberpunk development is ramping up. Cyberpunk will port the Witcher3 engine to Vulkan. At some point when that implementation is stable, a breakoff team will investigate porting Witcher3 to SteamOS/Linux with Vulkan support only.

Speculation: It's looking like Rocket League may finally arrive on Linux in September

Ashes of the Singularity still plans Vulkan and Linux & SteamOS support

Ultimately I think this is a good thing. Vulkan is the way forward for Linux gaming, and issues of support will fade pretty quickly. I'm impressed that Nvidia and AMD have Vulkan support going back for cards 2-3 years old. The aggressive support from hardware vendors should encourage game developers to prioritize the transition.

Quoting: Mountain ManYeah, but it's a question of customer support. So they can target Vulkan exclusively because SteamOS supports it, even though many distributions of Linux do not. Likewise, Xbox One developers don't have to target Directx9 even though many Windows games do. Game developers don't want to answer every question about every possible Linux configuration. SteamOS is a stable base with a major company behind who can support both users and developers. When we speak of Linux support, we mean SteamOS support. That's an odd distinction when you consider that SteamOS is Linux.
