Valve turns 20 years old today, happy birthday! A brief look at their Linux history

Quoting: PublicNuisanceI may prefer DRM free games over Steam these days but even I know I have to thank Valve for it's dedication to Linux. If they hadn't supported Linux then the likes of GOG, Itch.io, etc may not have either.
Is Steam an equivalent to DRM though?

Yes, Steam provides DRM for developers that wish to use it, but many games come with DRM independent from Steam and there are games on Steam that don't use any DRM and you can start them directly by running the executable.

Looks like Subnautica from the Natural Selection 2 developers won't get Linux support

Quoting: FratmI'm just tired of the empty promises. We have had a lot of them lately. It's down right dishonest of the developers to claim they will support our platform, and then after all the hype they dump it.

Most of those promises happened back when it seemed that Valve cared about SteamOS, GabeN announced that Linux is the future of gaming and Steam Machines were The Next Big Thing, together with the Steam Controller. When Steam Machines and SteamOS were all but abandoned by Valve, Linux market share remained stuck at less than 1%, many companies revisited these plans.

I don't think it is dishonest, they anticipated a trend that didn't materialise, so they adjusted their strategy. Sure, it would be nice if all these developers admitted that openly.

I'm kind of fine with it, as there are enough games which were actually released on Linux. Witcher 3 is the only huge disappointment for me :(

Quoting: HalKadoNice writeup! Happy birthday steam! :D

We still don't have all the AAA titles windows gets, but in the last year I think the tipping point was reached where there is enough entertaining linux titles out there that gamers no longer need dual booting, big thanks to steam and valve for this!
2016 is the year of Linux gaming backlog for me :D

Quoting: barottoI remember playing Half Life on my 3dfx Voodoo Graphics. I could say "those were the days" but actually today things are much better: faster, easier and way cheaper.
And yet I miss those days a little. In the '90s each year was a breakthrough, and some years were true milestones. Doom in '93, Warcraft in'94, Descent in '95, Tomb Raider & Quake in '96, Diablo in '97 and Half Life in '98. Can you imagine it was only two years between the first Quake and Half Life? Yet these were games from different eras.

Planet Nomads looks incredible and it's officially coming to Linux this month

The game looks really nice. I wonder how it feels though. Rising World looked nice, as a departure from blocky Minecraft, but resulted in an uncanny valley feel instead.

Total War: WARHAMMER is still coming to Linux, being ported by Feral Interactive

I have always been a huge Warhammer fan - especially in its fantasy flavour. Vermintide was the last Windows-only game I've bought.

I was so happy when Total War Warhammer for Linux was announced. When it was published Windows only I decided that enough is enough: no Linux/SteamOS support, no purchase. Even easier that my ageing Windows PC would not handle the game anyway, but my Steam Machine I'd definitely up to the task :)

Linux desktop marketshare has grown for three consecutive months

Windows 10 effect perhaps? A combined effect of forcing it down the throat, intrusive invigilation and pushing Windows Store adverts?

Edit: with these numbers though it might simply be people who are dual booting and now spend more time using Linux rather than new installations...

Dear Valve and Steam Machines OEMs, you have it all wrong

I spent €900 on my Zotac Nen. Not too little, I know. But I did my homework and the best preassembled itx system I could get for this money would have similar components just with 970 instead of 970m. But mini itx is huge compared with Nen.

So at least the price point of Nen is actually pretty good.

What have you been playing on Linux recently and what do you think about it?

Transistor, Age of Wonders 3, Minecraft, Ark (runs great on the ZOTAC Steam Machine).

I remember comments to such stories from a few years ago. A handful of titles recycled in all posts. Now it seems like every post mentions a different set of games. Sure, some recurring great titles, but the variety is impressive.

I played American Truck Simulator on Linux, don't ever let me drive a real truck

Now if only Train Simulator was available on Linux... :(
