Mad Max to release on 20th of October for Linux & SteamOS, being ported by Feral Interactive

Quoting: Mountain ManIf we had just one or two more developers like Feral then Linux gaming would be in very good shape, at least until developers start targeting Linux on their own.
I was hoping Aspyr would be one of them, but it isn't looking good with Aspyr right now. Virtual Programming isn't far behind the porting numbers from Feral, but they aren't publicly showing they are working on anything other finishing up Arma III right now so they may be shaky as well. Hopefully we see some movement from both of them in the next couple of months.

Quoting: SkarjakI am so tired of all this bait and switch from supposedly reputable developers. If you confirm a port, then it has to come out. You can't suddenly switch to "well, we're exploring it!". You've made a promise, and people may have preordered based on that promise.

At least I'm glad I didn't preorder this. I was thinking of doing it when they had the steam controller bundle out but now I am glad I didn't.

If this port doesn't come out I swear I will never buy a Firaxis or Aspyr product ever again. This is no joke.

And I wish more people had this attitude. Companies have to understand that they will lose our business if they yank us around.
I agree with most of this, but if we stop buying games they will simply stop making them. We need to support games that actually get released. On the same note, they should catch a load of **** when this kind of thing happens. As said repeatedly on this site, never buy a game until it is actually released on Linux.

Of course you have the right to your point of view, but if we all shared it developers would simply loose all interest in trying to release for Linux. We are not a large enough market at this time to have such an outlook, at least not if we actually want to get more good games on our platform.

Quoting: PicoboomDeepSilver has been great about getting AA and AAA titles ported to Linux, and Darksiders disappointment nothwithstanding, I'm excited to see this game is at last coming to Linux.
Darksiders doesn't belong to Deepsilver; THQNordic is the owner of the franchise... Nordic doesn't care about Linux recently.
I submitted the Darksiders games in the Feral requestinator stating that if Feral were doing them they would actually get done!

Quoting: soulsourceYep, as a game developer I can confirm that middleware can be a showstopper when it comes to portability. We use a special FX software which only supports Windows and (supposedly, but not really) Mac for our current Unity-project.
We're all well aware of that sort of issue. The question we have, since even us users are well aware of it, is why developers keep choosing to use middleware that isn't cross platform when they've promised to release cross platform?
Exactly, this kind of thing makes professionals come off as amateurs. If you have been using the middle-ware for a while (years) and are somewhat locked in it is more understandable, but to have released previous games (in the same series!) on other platforms and then go in reverse is unjustifiable.

Quoting: BillNyeTheBlackGuyI personally thought this game was hot garbage on windows. I honestly hope you guys get your money's worth, because I think you guys are better off buying a better game.
Do you own the game, have you played it? If you have, did you play after the recent patches that seem to have fixed a lot of the performance issues/bugs?

Asking because I've been following the game and a lot of people indicated a recent patch fixed most of the issues they were having and made the game much more enjoyable.

Quoting: MaCroX95Valve releasing an awesome Linux exclusive would mean only 1 thing... thousands of gamers rushing to install Linux to play a game HL3 for example :D Such thing needs to be done so Windows users would lose their tight grip to 1 OS. But back to reality Valve would never do such thing because they are really the one company that cares about PC gaming and their users opposite to majority of game development companies out there.
While I'm against platform-exclusive games on principle, I wouldn't particularly mind if Half-Life 3 was released on Linux first, say, perhaps a week before releasing to other platforms… :)
I disagree, however I wouldnt mind Half Life 3 having Legendary Exclusive perks only on SteamOS.

However I'm not against developers choosing to do exclusives.
I'm not against developers choosing to make a game for one platform. I am against platforms paying/pressuring developers to develop for only one platform (DirectX/Windows/Nvidia).

Quoting: SchattenspiegelDang it, Feral! Again a (actually three) multiplayer title(s) without crossOS playability....#@&!?
Don't get me wrong, I love what you are doing and I might end up buying them anyway(have not played them yet), but this is as close to a dealbreaker as you can get for me. I know it is not really your fault, but is there not something that can be worked out with the Windows devs/publishers to archieve compatibility without to much efford for titles like these?
We hear ya, and will continue to look into it.
In the meantime, meet us on the Linux/Mac multiplayer Steam Group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/maclinux [External Link] We'll all try out Dawn of War II together.

Thanks for your support, all!
Is it not possible for you guys to replace the netcode in the Windows version with what you guys use for Mac and Linux? Have it update the Windows versions in steam and have all three platforms playing together.

Quoting: ysblokjeTry removing libasound.so(.2) from the 64 bit libraries in your steamruntime. I got it down to libasound on arch.
Works :)
I wonder if you get around removing by using LD_PRELOAD to load the native system version instead of the steam libs?

or you could symlink the rest of the steamlibs to a different folder and omit just that one

Quoting: pete910Can someone explain why cross platform seems to cause problems? Is it engine specific ?
Their reasoning was linked to in the article already:
Note: Sadly, like Company of Heroes 2 these games do not support cross-platform multiplayer with Windows. Important to note, as this may be a deal breaker for some of you. You can see their explanation [External Link] of why this is the case for CoH2, which likely applies here too.
I wonder if it would be possible for Feral to replace the network code in the Windows version so that it would be cross platform? I know Feral doesn't work on Windows games, but if they could replace just the netcode I don't see why it would really be a problem. The update could go out through steam and everyone would be able to play multiplayer together cross platform. Would be nice.
