Looks like Mojang will be supporting the new Minecraft launcher on Linux
26 Oct 2016 at 7:45 pm UTC

Why didn't they start a Launcher with Qt, GTK+ or plane OpenGL on Linux? "Porting" (in this case just building for macOS and Windows) would be much easier (Windows: Use MinGW or link against cygwin1.dll; macOS: Just make). Another option would be to open-source the launcher, then Launcher would have been ported almost immediately by the community ... :D
This can be interpreted as another sign from M$ that they don't really want to support Linux and instead try to run their Embrace-Extend-Extinguish-strategy.

Feral Interactive are teasing a Linux announcement for tomorrow, hype train is leaving the station

I hope it'll be GTA V or Rise of the Tomb Raider, although I have a working solution for these Windows-Games in a VM. But even if they don't announce GTA V or Rise of the Tomb Raider tomorrow, every great game with a many fans released for Linux is a step in the right direction.

Editorial: I ditched SteamOS in favour of a normal Linux distribution for my gaming

I only use PCs and Laptops on which I want the full PC-experience, and Steam OS is not made for this, so I install Debian Unstable on them. There I could use Steam Big Picture if I wanted to.
In general I like building my own system more than just installing something prebuilt because I want to know exactly how it is made and I want it to be and do exactly what I want it to.

But I think Steam OS is important: It allows people to get in touch with Linux by using it on a games console without the need to decide which distro is the best for their use.

Very nice work, but I miss something:

Please add the following questions:
"Windows VM for Gaming?" with options "No", "Yes", "Yes, with dedicated graphics"
"Do you use Wine for gaming?" with options "No", "Yes"

Some questions about intel-cpus (e.g. SandyBridge, SandyBridge-E, IvyBridge, IvyBridge-E, Haswell, Haswell-E, Broadwell, Broadwell-E, Skylake, KabyLake, ...) and motherboard vendors would also be nice. Same thing about gpu-families (nvidia: maxwell, pascal, ...; amd: SouthernIslands, VolcanicIslands, PirateIslands, Polaris, ...)

Mojang working on new launcher for Minecraft, Linux might not see support

Quoting: mrboeseI'm using MultiMC, so I'm not directly affected ... yet.
I have the feeling that there will be more and more "inconveniences". It won't break. But similar to Skype Minecraft will be more and more "behind" the Windows version. The community will surely find its way around some things - things that should be the responsibility of Microsoft/Mojang.
Those inconveniences ... what did Tim Sweeney say recently about Windows 10 and Steam? ( https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/epic-games-founder-thinks-microsoft-will-essentially-break-steam-in-later-versions-of-windows-10.7731 )

I think that's part of Microsoft's "embrace, extend and extinguish"-strategy: First, they make gaming on windows more and more convenient, then they add some features (UWP, Windows Store, forced upgrades, ...), and then make steam work not as well as gamers want to force them to use Windows Store. And if that doesn't help, they use the forced upgrades to trigger the kill switch for Steam.
What happens now with Minecraft might be a part of that strategy, too. They already got the "extend" part done by Mojang before MS bought them, now, they are going to extend it (new launcher, probably more later), and then they're going to kill legacy, linux-compatible launchers for example by removing native lwjgl-so files or by creating another authentication.

Steam's latest Hardware Survey is out, shows Linux at 0.84%

Yesterday, I was asked to participate in the Steam hwsurvey in my Windows Gaming VM (with QEMU/KVM and GTX 970 passthrough). They asked my only once for the hwsurvey on Linux for the whole time I use Steam. But if I boot up some of the old Windows partitions I haven't used for many months and launch steam, they ask me almost immediatly wheather I want to participate.
Like many other users, I think they are trying to push the Windows-percentages for whatever reason. Maybe they prepare the statistics for a boost as large as possible when the Steam Machines are brought to the masses.

What game would you most like to see on Linux this year?

Of course Grand Theft Auto V, but also some Call of Duty Games, and Farming Simulator and Bus Simulator.
