The share of Linux users on Steam is still holding steady

Quoting: AnxiousInfusionUnless the Steam client goes open source and they start offering DRM-free options, I will be ditching Steam ASAP.
Steam does not force games to use DRM. That is what the developers choose (or don't). As for it going open source: that's just as likely as Debian providing non-outdated software ;)

Quoting: AnxiousInfusionI hate having software installed on my system that shows me popup advertisements when I open it.. like why do I even make an exception to tolerate this shit?
You do know that you can disable these, right?

Steam -> Settings -> Interface -> "Notify me about [...]"

You will want to force your CPU into high performance mode for Vulkan games on Linux

Concerning setuid on Scripts. This should *not* work on any recent Linux system, as it provides an even larger possible security vulnerability than setuid is to begin with. For details see here:

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/unix-faq/faq/part4/section-7.html [External Link]

Regarding the frequency governers for Intel CPUs:

These governors are *not* comparable to the regular pstate driver for Linux (e.g. used on older Intel Cores and AMD Cores). Intel implements its own policies in the driver that are independent of the cpufreq policies. Thus cpufreq policies will *not* work as expected. Details can be found here:

https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/cpu-freq/intel-pstate.txt [External Link]

This driver especially does *not* honor additional cpufreq settings apart from max_freq / min_freq.

What have you been playing recently and what do you think about it?

I liked Shadow Tactics a lot recently. And then I started playing EU4. Now I'm broke, have lost all my free time and kind of love/hate my friend for fixing me up to the game.

Life is Strange released for Linux & SteamOS, some thoughts and a port report included

That's what I thought crazy :D Have fun playing this great game and see you in 2 days ^^. Honestly, I wouldn't expect any problems. Been playing it with mesa git-head, llvm git-head and libdrm git-head just a few weeks back - albeit with the radeon driver. So I would still like to know how it fares with AMDGPU.

Mesa has a patch from a Valve developer to help ARK Survival Evolved run on the open source drivers

I agree with jf33. Either this or make another wrapper application that can conditionally patch such features into mesa (LD_PRELOAD or whatever). Quirks for individual games or applications in generic code are a nightmare. The result would be a situation like in Windows, where games get faster when you rename them because the drivers switch out the shaders and turn on 'quirks'/'bugfixes' based on the exename.

Further, has anyone thought about who is to maintain such quirks? How long should they stay? Up to which severity do you patch mesa? And who is going to maintain the hell of errata/quirks you get? I just don't like the approach and would rather that Linux stay clear from this approach. If the game is broken, return it. If you need a quirk in the driver to make it work you have proof that its broken. End of story.

Some thoughts on switching from Ubuntu to Antergos for Linux gaming

Liam, nice choice :)

But I'm sure you'll see the light and come to Gentoo, once you notice that the coolest thing about Arch is AUR with its source builds, but that Gentoo does the same so much better ;) :D

Have fun!

Some thoughts on Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, the real-time tactics game

Thanks for this article! I played the demo and instantly bought it. Brings back good memories from my Commands times. Real Time Tactics was a genre really missing on Linux.

A Linux release for Kingdom Come: Deliverance still looks very unclear

I just got my refund. It all went smooth and the community manager was very understanding of my situation. I got the full amount refunded (minus the Paypal fee for receiving the payment, which is fine with me). I understand that sometimes things don't work out as planned, although I would prefer that more careful planning happens before claims for target platforms are made.

I still hope that they are successful and maybe in time we will see a Linux version. I just don't want to bear the risk of that not happening.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided released for Linux, port report and review

Hey feral! Thank you so much for this port.

Just a quick question before I buy: Do you get a larger cut if I buy on the feral store instead of directly through steam? I would prefer to give the largest possible share of my purchase to you.

There is a demo available now for ‘Epistory: Typing Chronicles’, a Bastion-like typing adventure

I can really recommend this game! It worked flawlessly on my system (Gentoo ~amd64, radeon mesa Radeon HD7950) and I really loved the art style and even liked the story and the way it was told.

This game was an instant buy after being directly released on Linux and I have no regrets!
