Opinion: Why We Want Native Ports Only
5 Jul 2015 at 5:16 pm UTC Likes: 2

This industry has enough problems with ports from consoles to PC (last shitstorm with Batman: Arkham Knight proved it once again), at that point we should be grateful we are getting anything at all, really ;)

If you are not familiar with the gaming industry you might overrate developers capabilities of keeping and maintaining their own source code after as short time as, let's say, two years. Not to mention, that wrapping technologies REALLY are often cheaper to use.

You want developers to learn how to multiplatform? That is very nice of you. But hey, they do not own you a thing. So stop acting like you are entitled to any kind of treatment and if you don't like something, just do not buy it.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for native ports. But just understand, that is not always possible. And that a bad native port is way worse than a good wrapper.

MegaSphere, A Seriously Good Looking Sci-fi Platformer With A Big Gun

Does anyone remember the game called Abuse? It was available in Debian repositories some time ago... Anyway, my thoughts after seeing this trailer: Abuse and... Portal (after seeing the last scene from the trailer).

Nice that it is going to be available on Linux, even though trailer and their webpage has only Windows and Mac logos :)

Happy birthday, GOL, Liam and the community!

Now, stop being dicks to developers. Yes, even when they're wrong. Yes, even when they're being dicks.

Steam Replaces The Linux Tux Logo With SteamOS

As much as I've seen this one coming, I still am very sad right now... But as long as our friends at Valve won't forget where SteamOS came from and both client and games will still work on any distro thanks to the famous Steam Runtime... I think I can live with that.

If that is a part of SteamOS branding push, just a marketing move... Godspeed, Steam Machines! Cause their success will mean more users, more games, better drivers and an overall a noticeable step forward for Linux.

But I would really like to see someone at Valve, in best scenario Gaben himself reassuring us, that Linux (at least goddamn Ubuntu) will still be supported Steam platform, and that it won't change in foreseeable future.

Two Worlds II Action RPG Will Apparently Still Be Ported To Linux

Quoting: PJwouldn't have high hopes for this - RealityPump is said to have financial troubles and reached bankruptcy ( source [External Link] - in PL) .
That is true. However in the same thread saying about Mac/Linux ports, Raidor (apparently a Topware employee) says that most of developers stayed in the company [External Link].

On the other hand, Topware (the publisher) is not really reliable or quick in their promises. They promised us Wine wrappers for their older titles 2 years ago and we havent seen these to this day (well, at least not on Linux, because they released a Mac Wine wrapper for JA2: Wildfire [External Link] and Septerra Core [External Link]last month. Raidor stated, that these will come to Linux too, eventually.

We first port some of our older titles to OSX and will continue with Linux.
Still, would love to see their games introducing Linux support.

Quoting: GuestIt might be time to change "Games using Wine wrappers (such as The Witcher 2)" since The Witcher 2 has never been using Wine.
This^

More fitting examples: System Shock 2 (Crossover wrapper, available on Steam), Flatout 2 (Wine wrapper, available on GOG).

GOG's Installer Encryption Proving to be Difficult for Linux Users

Is preventing legitimate customers that use Linux from playing the games worth saving a couple of minutes of support time and the computers of a handful of pirates?
Legitimate? Just pointing out that those 'legitimate' ones want to play games that are not in any way supported for Linux...

Unfortunately, yes. I should have been clearer about that, and have made a minor change to the article to point that out.
Dammit! I think I'll wait for the Haxe remake.
Not 100% sure but I believe the standalone game doesn't need installing anything in your system to work. But it uses Flash, it just might be integrated with the game binary or something like that ;)
