Why the failures? Evans said "The mistake was that we underestimated what made consumers use Steam. It was a store, a social network, a library, and a trophy case all in one. And it worked well".I feel that every Steam competitor fails to understand that. And that Steam is even more than that. Constantly dropping extra features like Remote Play Together or Game Recording plays a significant role as well.
