Humble extends their End of Summer Sale, here's some of the best Linux games

I still find it surprising that I sometimes see games that I've never seen before. In this case it's "A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build" that I managed to miss completely. It shows that it is always good to check out these articles.

With a rewritten rendering engine that gives Vulkan support, X-Plane 11.50 is out now

Quoting: AzPInteresting! I've seen many comments (from the developers I think) that the graphics engine really isn't their main bottleneck, but more or less "everything else". But another native Vulkan-based engine is always welcome!

I'm looking forward to tests of it on Phoronix (or other sites).
I could be wrong here, but moving to Vulkan should make the VR stuff work in Linux? As I believe native Vulkan is a requirement at this point?

So there is that... which also means I should really dig into it with my overly expensive Thrustmaster Warthog set up + Valve Index :)
Nah, that worked with OpenGL as well. What didn't work were the index controllers since the default bindings left you without the ability to interact.

Performance wasn't the main focus of going Vulkan. It was really about getting the rendering engine into a debuggable state where they could actually fix things according to real data instead of having to guess where the OpenGL driver was having issues. This in turn should (eventually) lead to a stutter free flying experience. Having a more modern platform for the future was of course a thing as well. Eventually they will have to overhaul the weather (rendering) engine.

I've held off on testing the Vulkan renderer so far. Mostly because I've been busy with other things. But it looks like it's time to give it a spin again!

Still curious about this one. Kind of looks like an upscaled Rimworld. So count me in!

Feels a lot like HL1 with better lighting. Trailer doesn't really give me a good insight into the gameplay.

I find the visuals of this game to be very hard on the eyes. Cool to see an FPS game in Godot though.

The reason why I would want something like this is to get it to use proper fullscreen so vsync/gsync would work like it should. But this never seems to work for electron apps. I wonder if this is something that can be fixed.

Bringing together audio and video, PipeWire for Linux is really coming along
7 Sep 2020 at 9:12 pm UTC

Quoting: LinasIn the olden days you could only play one audio stream at the time on Linux, because most sound cards only have a single hardware channel.
Not sure what "olden days" you're referring to, but it seems to me that the situation for default audio chipsets now is much worse than it was in soundcard days. The old wavetable cards had a whole stack of channels back in the 90s.

I'm hoping pipewire does things right. Pulse has some nice ideas, but a lot of practical issues. The main one is not having enough control over what it does. These sort of systems need a full gui to control it though. I have a setup where one computer connects to my main desktop to play audio. I've set that up maybe two times and as a result I don't remember the details and need to consult the documentation every time.

Factorio. Yep, that's it. Building a megabase is a lot of work, but an interesting design challenge.
