Linux Gaming News Punch - Episode 20

Quoting: GuestThe solution for publishers removing support for games is simple: Steam shouldn’t force game updates on us. If you buy it and it works, then great. You can play that version forever. Kind of how DRM-free works…

I don't think the game is removed. It's just that you can't connect to the new server versions any more. But you might be able to run your own if they have a dedicated one available.

A new Steam Client Beta is up and it looks like Valve may add better support for Soundtracks

Had to disable the beta when the library page (others remained functional) started freezing (no screen updates except for when you switched back from another page). Is this problem gone now?

Quoting: drmothActually happy to hear there's a redux version plannned...developers show their best work in these "ultimate/redux/defititive edition" versions.

It's not a redux version of the game, just for the first two episodes of the Wintermute story mode. And were already released before ep 3. Right now they're working on the last two episodes, which should in theory go quicker now that they have their method worked out better.

vkBasalt, an open source Vulkan post processing layer for Contrast Adaptive Sharpening

I wonder if it's just me, but I really don't like the artificial sharpening. Never have on any medium and for any game that offers the option I turn it off. It just feels harsh and unnatural.

Vulkan support is not far away now for the flight sim X-Plane 11, physics & flight model updates coming

Quoting: Cyba.CowboyGonna be picky here, but Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is not expected to support Linux-based operating systems though, so technically, X-Plane has no real competition...
I can't imagine even the hardest core, Richard Stallman worshiping Linux flight sim fan wouldn't do a dual boot or get a new machine to run MS 2020 when it comes out (assuming Proton doesn't work). I mean, dating myself here, I'm a flight simmer back to C64 and Apple IIe days, and MS2020 seems to be what we've all been waiting for our entire lives.

You're talking about an unreleased product. For now it's all hype. I don't have particularly much faith in the big data approach. Good data is only available for a relatively small part of the world. I expect the rest to look pretty mediocre. On top of that, is there any way you're expecting this online service not to be a subscription model? This is Microsoft after all. They may start out without it to gain traction, but that's where it will be going.

Also don't forget the amount of money that a lot of simmers have invested in their sim with specific add ons and scenery packs. That's not something you just dump to start over. Besides, even if they did make it run natively on Linux, I have no reason at all to trust Microsoft for the future. I'll stick with X-Plane.

Quoting: Cyba.CowboyDoes X-Plane support all those fancy flight simulator input / output devices (such as all the stuff Logitech sells? What about virtual reality headsets - are they supported under Linux-based operating systems?

I think most things are supported. Couldn't name one that isn't. And with a bit of work, you can add devices with images and definitions yourself since it is all config files. Although Logitech does not represent what is fancy. You could spend thousands on high grade yokes and throttle quadrants. :D Not sure about the cockpit stuff though since a lot of it is driven by plugins.

VR headsets are supported on Linux via SteamVR. Although getting the Index to work is a bit fiddly at the moment is it won't actually map its primary trigger. Which you need to actually map something.

Humble Monthly will be changing to Humble Choice later this year
20 October 2019 at 9:13 pm UTC

I bought a year of monthly when they discounted it to $99. Have been pausing quite a bit so it might last me two years. In fact, like scaine I'll be pausing again this month.

I suppose not extending it when it runs out is also considered cancelling. Anyway, need to have a thought about it. On the other hand the choice seems rather good, but it depends on what I can choose from. Should have a few months left to test it.
