What have you been playing on Linux? Come and have a chat

Onto the subject of gaming on Linux: honestly, the majority of my personal game time has been taken up by Into the Breach. It's so gorgeously streamlined, accessible, fun and it's also ridiculously complex at the same time. Tiny maps that require a huge amount of forward thinking, as you weigh up each movement decision against any possible downsides. It's like playing chess, only with big mecha fighting off aliens trying to take down buildings.
I like into the breach. There's one issue though. I got my "Victory" achievement in one game and two hours of play because the game "lets" you. Now I need to find a reason to play it again to see what more the game has to offer, but so far I haven't done that. The whole "you can go to end game any time you want" thing hasn't been helpful to keep me in the game.

Quoting: GuestBeen tweaking and tuning my system for VR. Built a liquourix/zen kernel for my gentoo install and tried some different power management approaches, but my 2080 and the nVidia drivers really don't cut it for VR on linux. It would mostly be okay if I ran the index at 90 hz and really cut down settings in HL:Alyx, but it would still cause nausea inducing stutters fairly frequently.
2080 should be fine, especially for Alyx. Key is turn switch back to legacy reprojection and keep the headset at 80 or 90 Hz. You might get a frameskip here and there, but nothing jarring. "Normal" reprojection is so broken on nvidia that it's unusable and makes it look like the performance is low.

Humble Choice for July is up with Railway Empire, EARTHLOCK and more

Quoting: EhvisAlso noticed another thing. It used to be enough to "have" humble monthly to get your 20% off in the store. They now changed it to require it to be unlocked.
I've not had to do that? Odd, it just happened as I would have expected.
No. You could use the 20% until you paused. After that it was gone until the new month started.

Quoting: spjoeBasingstoke and Earthlock have no Linux icon. Do these games officially support Linux?
They have Linux icons on Steam.

Purism reveal their powerful privacy-focused Librem 14 laptop

You're paying quite the premium for those privacy features though. Did a quick check on what it would cost to have it "here" (including VAT and such), it would be about 40% more expensive than a locally available laptop of similar specs. For that difference I would sort out my own privacy settings.

Whoa, you will probably love the Ferram Aerospace Research [External Link] mod (the author is no longer active, but there's a fork [External Link] for recent KSP versions).
I have looked at mods to make things a bit more realistic in term of size and physics. I was hoping to find a mod that would replace the two body physics implementation with a three body one so that all those stable orbits wouldn't be so stable any more. But since it would still be "Kerbal physics", it seemed like a good idea to first see how that worked.

Dark sci-fi action RPG 'Hellpoint' launches July 30

Quoting: Liam DaweAlso as a note: since July 30 is my birthday our thoughts on it may be delayed ;)
So what you really want to say is that you want to play and not write about it. But really, we all have to work on our birthdays, can't leave us in the dark!

A chat with the developer of the action-packed roguelike Burning Knight

I can imagine that it's hard to get seen in the flood of games. Especially in the roguelike segment where you're not exactly alone. Need some luck there I think.

Still a very good show to get a full game on there at 17. Even if motivation was a problem, you still managed to get through it and get it done. Don't think I would have replicated that at that age.

Godot 4.0 will get SDF based real-time global illumination

Quoting: NagezahnThere's another demonstration video available which, for a graphics tech noob like me, illustrates very well what global illumination can do for your game. I was very impressed:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFKPrDv-Ue8 [External Link]
Thanks, that video seems much better to me at showing what it does. A clear demonstration of indirect lighting. Seems they did keep tonemapping turned off, which means the insides look extremely dark. It also demonstrates a downside of the system. Since the probes don't extend far from the camera, there are visual lighting changes when scenery comes into the view of the probes. But it's still early, so they may be able to improve these transitions. Still would be interested to see a properly textured scene with a transition with all the bells and whistles turned on from darker low level interior lighting to full sunlight outside. These transitions have always been problematic for current rendering engines.
