AMD Zen looks like it will release at CES in January 2017

Quoting: staticx27I have an fx-8350 and has never showed it wasn't enough. I've always liked AMD and have used it for so long I can't even remember the last time I used Intel for my main rig. My laptops use Intel but they're old and I don't really use them that much. Even though I knew AMD was sort of slipping behind Intel, I've remained loyal...for some reason. If the price is right, though, I would be interested in picking up a Zen. It's all about price, for me.
I have used AMD since... the K6 (including the -2 and -III), and currently have an FX-8350. I have patiently waited for Zen, but its been tough - it has gotten quite long in the tooth in just this past year. Still a bit jaded on the not deliver, but often promised, piledriver on AM3+, but, I guess I can still wait a few months to see how Zen really does.

Aveyond 4, a popular Windows RPG released for Linux

Quoting: RadialApps#2, probably a one position glitch. These occurred during testing once or twice, but I couldn't fix them, because they weren't reproducible here.

#3 is a known intermittent bug, and I am still finding a solution for it. It probably has something to do with caching. A quick fix that mostly works instead of restarting is to simply save the game wherever you are and then again load it from the menu.
I also came across a another bug now where the battle system completely looks up, requiring alt+tab (or switch to vt) and manually killing the process - looks like it spikes the cpu core it is using at 100%. The game is pretty fun, but this plus the other bug makes the port pretty buggy. Since it isn't on Steam, how will people know if/when updates are released?

So far kind of fun, but there have been a few issues:

1) As already reported, I have came across 2 places where the text overflows the box (not a huge deal, I guess).

2) I had one issue with clipping - where basically I got stuck on a tile that I wasn't supposed to be able to walk over, resulting in needing to load my save game.

3) This is the biggest issue: After playing for a bit, things get incredibly choppy when moving up/down. Moving left/right is fine, but moving vertically causes all of the character movement frames to drop (and the sprite itself), so it seems like the character just teleports up/down - plus there is a noticeable lag/pause. It is very annoying. Leaving an area and returning to it (basically a map load) sometimes cures it, sometimes it requires a restart.

#3 is almost game breaking, really - I have had to exit the game at least 5-10 times already, and I am only a few hours into it. Also, the game doesn't appear to support widescreen resolutions at full screen ?

Cities: Skylines - Natural Disasters expansion announced, mother nature is pissed

Quoting: Mountain ManSpeaking of Cities: Skylines, I wonder when they're going to get the Linux performance issues sorted out?
Performance issues are related to Unity engine. While it's getting better, progress is slow. I don't think it's Colossal Order's fault.
I still think it is their issues, considering I personally tested and livestreamed it before release where it worked far better before a patch seemed to nerf it down. They have still never replied to me on that.
I think they are using a customize version of Unity, but I wonder what underlying version it is based off of. I know somewhere around 5.3 they apparently did a complete rewrite/overhaul of the OpenGL backend which might help, and 5.4 was supposed to bring multithreaded rendering among other improvements.

Since they are on a customized version though, no idea how hard it would be for them to upgrade the engine, or if they would even be interested in doing so anyways on a kind of older game. Its kind of a shame - definitely the best (modern) city building sim out there.

A reason for poor performance on AMD plus Mesa has been found and a patch is in progress

Quoting: ElectricPrismMy fellow Linux Peeps, we are a community who most of us likely has control issues, when Linus couldn't control the quality of the nVidia driver or force them into using a FOSS driver he gave them the finger.
Whatever floats your boat, but, he was really giving the finger to Optimus support (or lack there of), and their Android support. He did go back and give them a thumbs up, though, especially around their open source efforts on the Tegra K1 chips and integrating it into Nouveau.

In theory this game is just begging for Vulkan.
I'm sorry, but Vulkan won't change much compared to OpenGL in regard to ported games. If the ported game is not written or optimized for OpenGL from the beginning, then there's a slim chance to get comparable results, and is always going to be behind in performance. This should change in the feature (i hope so) by choosing Vulkan as primary API. You can see what is OpenGL capable of in the latest Doom if the game is made for it from the start.
Simply not true. Valve did mostly wrappers and gets near equal performance (or better in the early days). Even the Eon wrapper can get near Windows performance in some titles now. Hell, Wine can, too. All of Feral's ports seem to suffer from 50% performance loss including Shadow of Mordor, Tomb Raider, this, etc - it seems like they need to spend more time optimizing their process/wrapper that they use. Of course, the really older games do work great, and I would say Empire works better on Linux that I ever got it to work on Windows :)
