I'm not sure why you were seeing problems at 4k, I have no problems at all running it at 4k high settings on a 980ti. (Arch linux, latest kernel/drivers, hex core Xeon X5670 @ 4.2ghz cpu, 32gb ram, inno3d 980ti hybrid).
