This was a very cool talk. I've not played any of their ports but for just two 2 people to pull this off is a great feat of talent.
For a game this size that is still pretty fast. It's not workable for development, but still pretty fast.
Quoting: MaxPowerFor windows they distributed the build to all the computers available in the company while for the linux build they might not have or not on the same number of machines. They don't say but it could be one of the explanations why the make was so much longer. As I understand it they could not find any distributed (as in running the build on more then 1 computer) compiling system for linux which was stable enough to be used in production. So the 70 minutes (or 45 minutes with fast build) would have been solely on their 8 core i7 computers.
Also 2 dev for 4 months, it does not sound very expensive to port the game to Linux.
Lastly it would have been nice to know why they decided to do the port.
I assume that the dev you are in contact with, is the first guy as he seems to enjoy Linux. The other one used Windows while doing the port to Opengl.

SteamOS Beta Now Out In The Wild

Additionally it gives them less area to provide support on. Many linux problems arise from a simple faulty bios.

Quoting: Quote from minjWhat's with the UEFI requirement? My theory on that is two fold.
- Only relative newer hardware has UEFI
If the hardware still only has bios, it probably won't be powerfull enough to run steamOS - It ensures that even DIY steamboxes have boot times < 15 seconds
Additionally it gives them less area to provide support on. Many linux problems arise from a simple faulty bios.

Gnome tools probably turned out to be best compatible with steam

Quoting: Quote from Half-ShotInteresting that they are using Gnome for a desktop manager. I personally prefer it but I do know that the 3.6< had issues with rendering games so I wonder if they made some adjustments to that. If I were valve i would have gone for lxde with a bit of eye candy thrown in so the desktop was functional but not the centrepiece.funny that you mention that, since they did try lxde, as well as kde. According to the package log.
Haven't tried SteamOS yet but i will do in the new year when i build a steam box.

I'm almost never logged on and have gotten this survey pretty much every 2-4 months like clockwork. Around the same time I would have gotten it if I was on that other software.

This 'game'/concept is great, really easy to get a hold of and just play instantly. But the name eeewww, sounds like the developers fetish or something.
Still, looking forward to more info about this game.
