I too played a lot of Flashback, but never played Another World (Out of This World here). I played Flashback on the Genesis when that port came out and was curious about Out of This World, but never actually got it for my computer. I might have to pick this up at some point.
Games On AMD FOSS Drivers 2

My general experience says that Catalyst drivers stink for 2D acceleration, and thus generally for video playback. Once the open source drivers attain reasonable performance for 3D, I tend to switch to them because the overall experience is better, even if some games don't play quite as well (a few games may actually work better with the open source drivers because of bugs in Catalyst, but Catalyst drivers have fewer bugs than they used to).
You can get reasonable video playback with the Catalyst drivers by using a media player which supports OpenGL output and using that. Otherwise you will tend to get tearing.

Quoting: HamishI knew which driver he was referring to specifically, I was asking for his definition of what constitutes "proper drivers" as that was the point I was debating. I am not that aloof. :whistle:I think that loggfreak's point was that the anonymous poster actually said "prop drivers," and, while it is understandable that you would read that as 'proper drivers,' he thinks the poster meant 'proprietary drivers.' Personally, my initial tendency was to read it as 'proper,' but then I thought twice, and it's quite possible that loggfreak's impression is accurate.

Quoting: Alan ShawbridgeIt was treated like a third world citizen because it WAS. I was WAY behind D3D in terms of functionality and developer support.I think you're mixing up cause and effect here. It started to lose ground in certain ways because it was treated like a third world citizen rather than being treated like a third world citizen because it was losing ground.

I think it's worth pointing out that this game is developed by Nicalis, the same developer behind Cave Story, a platformer that has reached practically legendary status among fans of independent game developers, especially owners of Game Park Holdings or OpenPandora handhelds.

Quoting: SXXIf you try to look around you'll notice that MS don't give a #$@% about PC games and there is no "anti-OpenGL campaign".I'm not going to take issue with everything you said, but there is an anti-OpenGL campaign by Microsoft, and there has been since almost the first day they released Direct3D nineteen years ago.
OpenGL Is Broken According To Another Developer

I've been saying for a little while now that OpenGL ended up at a disadvantage, for game development in particular, for quite some time because of the Microsoft monopoly on the desktop, but that is changing.
When Direct3D first came out, and for a while afterward, people who used both environments expressed how superior OpenGL was. However, as time went on, Direct3D got a lot of developer attention because Microsoft had the resources to throw at it, while OpenGL, being actively campaigned against by Microsoft, got less and less attention. During this time period Direct3D ended up surpassing OpenGL in several ways.
However, with the advent of, first, 3D gaming consoles, and then later, iOS and Android phones and tablets, OpenGL started garnering attention again. Now that Microsoft's desktop monopoly doesn't cover all the latest 3D gaming hardware, OpenGL has gradually become a first class development standard again. We are only beginning to see the results of renewed interest in advancing the OpenGL environment. It will continue to improve.

Unepic 2D NES Style Platformer-RPG Is Still In The Works For Linux

It could be that porting the game to any platform other than the original helps with most other ports because the code has to be cleaned up and made more generally portable. Of course there is also the possibility that they had to make it work with OpengGL or some other more universal library for the Wii version, and that is also available for Linux and OS X.
Hyper Light Drifter, The Incredibly Stylish 2D Action RPG Has New Footage

This looks like just my type of game. Somehow it seems to me as though if there had been a Phantasy Star based action RPG, this is what it would have been like. Visuals are reminiscent of 16 bit era games, but clearly better (or perhaps of Legend of Oasis, a 32 bit game). The action looks like some of the better overhead action/RPG games, but with some new twists. I'm looking forward to this.
