Unity announce expanded support for Steam, Native Linux, Steam Deck and Steam Machine

Anyway, I think that instead of just using Windows versions via Proton, we should focus on native apps/games in the long-term. Only that way the compatibility problems can be sorted out and the situation can improve.

Quoting: tmtvlProprietary games using GNU/Linux APIs are bad. For example, Egosoft's X3 uses a GTK2 application to launch and GTK2 is no longer being updated (it's even been removed from the official Arch repositories). Because it's proprietary software the community can't just take it over and update it to use GTK3 or 4.This is handled by the Steam runtime nowadays if I am correct.

Quoting: StellaSo you think that native Linux apps/games are inherently bad. Why bother with Linux and not just use Windows in that case? But I think we can do better with a native solution.I hard disagree with this statement. Pretty much all existing Linux games suffer from various problems ranging from complete inplayability over control and gameplay/visual issues as well as crashes. Running games over Proton is vastly preferable to Native most of the time because the Windows API is much more stable than the Linux API. I myself have had so many issues with native ports that the Proton versions never have, that I've given up on them completely

Sure, I wouldn't be so mad if they did it the correct way. Proper *.flatpakref that is click-to-install.

Quoting: Liam DaweI don't know why we're acting like Flathub is the only right / official / proper way to do Flatpak? It's not, again - that's part of the point of it. This isn't Snap.Flathub kind of is the official (but not only) way to do Flatpak. :-)
I don't see anything actually wrong with how NVIDIA are doing this. All desktop platforms Windows, macOS and Linux get a direct download from NVIDIA.

Ugh, nope? Linux is not Windows. Do they also distribute their Android client as an *.apk?
They just make everything harder for their Linux users for no apparent reason - and even more harder since they distribute it as a binary blob instead of a standard *.flatpakref. Why?
Binary blob installers were a thing back in 2005s.
They probably do this for two reasons:
1. Add a Flathub remote and install additional dependencies from there. I however believe that a regular flatpakref can also do this and none of this was needed if they published it on Flathub.
2. Install and setup Flatpak support on Ubuntu (which does not have Flatpak support). But is it actually necessary since almost every other distro comes with a Flatpak support out-of-box?

Quoting: Liam DaweI do wish they would though, but they clearly want to control every single part of it and so they host it direct.Making it harder for end-users to find and install their client and also quite pointless since there already is an unofficial "GeForce Infinity" one that works very well and is available on Flathub.
Quoting: Liam DaweTheir script just sets up their Flatpak and their repository for it. You don't have to be given a flatpak file for it to be installed via a Flatpak. So it also is shipped as a binary blob? Oh wow, this is even worse than I thought. Do they even realize that flatpakrefs can also contain flatpak remotes?
