Site update: a notice about article and forum post subscription changes

Do subscriptions without emails actually do anything? I have two pages' worth of articles I'm subscribed to and I have yet to be notified of anything.

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, a fantasy solo RPG with turn-based battles will come to Linux

I do like going through a gamebook from time to time, even though the idea of doing it on a computer turns me off a bit. I'll keep an eye on this one since I also dig turn-based combat :)

Owners of Armello on GOG can get a refund due to it not getting DLC and online features
12 September 2016 at 4:22 pm UTC

Quoting: EhvisIf the claim is true that all the DLC content is included in the base game for multiplayer purposes, then the DLC is just a "right to use". Which is DRM and therefore can't be sold on GoG. There is no solution to this other than to take it away from the multiplayer experience. Either way, people will be unhappy.
Nailed it. The same would apply to Worms W.M.D. for example, where people who own the preorder extras grant the ability to use those extras to everyone they play with (during those matches only). I don't know if Armello actually uses that same reasoning with the new DLC, though. I have the Kickstarter-exclusive heroes and those aren't shared with other players. When you play online you have to use the standard heroes. Assuming the DLC also includes new cards and stuff, I presume they didn't want to activate them during only a fraction of gameplay since people paid for them, but I imagine they could have.

I think they basically traded one problem for another, but I don't know which was worse. One could have hampered the DLC sales, but the other apparently shat all over GoG users and led to refunds. They'll have to do the maths and figure it out for themselves but I doubt they would change their mind at this point.

ARK: Survival Evolved gains a paid DLC while still being in Early Access, reviews are destroying it

I can't say I care if every developer starts doing the same thing. If they've proven themselves and the content looks interesting and decently-priced I'll buy it. If not I'll wait for release and/or stick to the core content. Nothing worth getting my panties in a twist here.

ARK: Survival Evolved gains a paid DLC while still being in Early Access, reviews are destroying it

Meh, if people are willing to pay for Early Access, I don't see why they wouldn't pay for extra content while in Early Access. They're already playing the game on a regular basis and obviously enjoying it, and an expansion takes time and resources to develop regardless of when you release it. Sure I'd probably focus on the core engine before I started making expansions, but I can see this game being "in development" for years with people playing it. It's not the first time I see MMOs running prolonged betas and releasing new content before hitting their official release, even though it's probably the first time I see them charge for it.

I don't play ARK so I'm indifferent to the news anyway, but I must say that level design looks really sweet.

OTON X claims to be the first artificial intelligent games console, it's powered by Linux

From the video, it looks like either a scam or a completely useless product. It's kind of like RPGMaker for 2D platformers, if you take out all the creative process from RPGMaker and ship it on a console for some reason.

Armello, the really fun strategy game has a new DLC with more characters
1 September 2016 at 3:53 pm UTC

I have mixed feelings about Armello. It seems well designed and interesting, but actually playing it kind of frustrates me because of how long it takes, how much is going on and how little you can influence it. It's supposed to be a digital board game, but it has a lot of aspects that would be terrible on tabletop. Out-of-turn manages to feel both boring and too short depending on whether you have a new quest to select, whether you have any cards to play out-of-turn and whether other players play cards on you. Since you can't do anything when engaged by another player in combat, or play cards against players dealing with perils or fighting or moving, you're constantly trying to time actions that in real life would be as simple as saying "Wait, I'm playing this card on you before you leave that space." And while you're choosing quests or equipping items, you can't see what's going on on the board so you lose track of who's where and what they gain.

Anyway, I have a free code for the DLC if someone wants to arrange some kind of trade for it.

Worms W.M.D is out day-1 on Linux, here's some early thoughts

Thanks dfrn, no more crashing here either as far as I can tell. Can't wait to find the time to really try out the game :)

No Man's Sky has been shown to work rather well in Wine on Linux
17 August 2016 at 4:34 pm UTC

Quoting: KimyrielleFor example, Guild Wars 2 was marked as gold, but the game ran with 15-20 FPS, which is totally unplayable in practice.
Heh. Been playing it at that framerate since release. WvW wasn't really an option, though.

Last time I tried Guild Wars 2 on Wine, IIRC mouse input didn't work and there was something wrong with the map. I think the trading post didn't work either. Now I'm playing it every day on Mint and while the frame rate is not excellent (on a GTX 560), I can get a fairly stable 30 FPS with medium settings, which is at least more than on my Win7 laptop (GT540M). The only problem I've found so far is a broken texture change when I switch gear or apply dyes, and I only have to alt-tab back into the game to force a redraw (tedious when you're trying out dyes, but hey I'll take it over not being able to play at all).

Worms W.M.D should now be a day-1 Linux & SteamOS release
16 August 2016 at 5:27 pm UTC

System requirements have been added to the Steam page:
MINIMUM:
OS: Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit version), SteamOS, Linux Mint 17.1
Processor: Intel Dual Core 6600 @ 2.4GHz
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: Intel 4400, GeForce GTX 280, AMD Radeon HD 7750
RECOMMENDED:
OS: Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit version), SteamOS, Linux Mint 17.1
Processor: [email protected], AMD FX 6300 3.5GHz
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: GeForce GTX 750, AMD R7 370

With the countless hours my friends and I spent on this game (well, Armageddon) back in secondary school, it wouldn't be right not to support this!
