Quoting: LeerdeckLet's be real here. Valve doesn't support Linux because they believe that the year of the Linux desktop is coming. Nobody does that. Valve does this because of cloud-streaming gaming that someday in the far future will be a available alternative. Because if you run a big server farm you don't want use Windows licenses. Every major publisher will someday port their games to Linux but only for their own server farms. Valve will not stop supporting Linux infrastructure because they don't really care about Linux desktop end users. That we profit from it is just a really nice side effect and we provide test results + bug reports. No more calls, we've got a winner! I think this is much closer to the truth than anything else I've read or heard elsewhere. I think Valve has been telegraphing this quite clearly in their focus on Streaming technology, and is one of the reasons I believe the Link went away. Google seems like they are on the verge of a Streaming gaming service themselves. NVIDIA is already in the space. It's the best way Valve maintains their advantage: By having a technology that everyone else will have to spend a fortune to develop, being able to implement that more cheaply than others via their Linux expertise, and leveraging their existing library. We users beta test Proton and win. Quite right. Makes a lot more sense than "new Steam Machines!"

Quoting: buenaventuraI wonder what "open platform" they were thinking then.FreeBSD!! Everyone is ignoring the obvious: It's the year of the FreeBSD gaming desktop!! They're going to do it just to spite Linux users ;-)

- There are exclusives coming to Epic to which we won't have access (bye bye Rebel Galaxy Outlaw)
- They (and Discord) are now potentially blowing up the pricing model that has been sustaining Linux-friendly stores like Valve and GOG
- There's Tencent, a huge Chinese company with tentacles all over the industry (including Discord) with tons of money and influence and Chinese companies in other industries have not hesitated to use that money and influence to artifically undercut (dumping) and extinguish competitors.

Quoting: GuestWhy would anyone care about a new gaming store? They won't be able to compete with steam anyway. And for us - linux gamers - epic doesn't exist. As pointed out above in various posts, reasons to care are:

Quoting: slaapliedjeIt's kind of tough to say at this early stage what effect it'll have...True that... There are some studios dropping Linux efforts and saying, in effect, use Proton (but not outright supporting it), and other devs (see the article here on Clone Drone in the Danger Zone) changing their games to make them work on Proton, so it could go either way... It could explode as studios develop for Proton, or, well, nothing could happen. 2019 will tell us a lot...

Quoting: jensNo, avoiding Wine would be kind of counterproductive (someone needs to test the base components of Steam Play :D)And now that Steam Play counts our play time of Windows titles as Linux use in the reports developers see, I actually see the use of Steam Play as a way to send devs a message we are out there...

Quoting: TheRiddickI'd be more into a coop survival experience then PvP...The way I've played it is coop survival, and it was a blast that way. Its PvP actually I don't think is very good, other games are much better at that. But coop is great.

PS: I seem to remember there being a number of players for Interstellar Marines who I think had a Friday night schedule. I'll check...

Quoting: liquid_linuxI suggest we make a tournament on GOL or maybe set up a play schedule so we all can meet up and play the game.Absolutely, count me in. There are lots of games I'd love to do such scheduling or maybe have a Linux team (Rocket League!). Does the site have an area for such coordination?
I guess I will be buying it, hope we can play some time.

I'm the one who originally reached out to the dev on MP and let Liam know about this as well, and I can't recommend the game highly enough. The swordplay mechanics are great, it's a genuinely funny game, and it has my favorite battle royale implementation of any game I've played (a dozen or so robots facing off with lightsabers, arrows, and hammers... what could be more fun?). Performance is terrific and the gameplay is very balanced...

Quoting: MichaelDNThat's cool but 'no tux no bucks'.In this era, I personally think that's counterproductive, especially when you have a dev in this case who's modifying the game so it works for the tux...
