Quoting: tijderBut I think that Feral's budget is still split between Mac and Linux :) and if it counts as a Mac sale they keep bringing more titles to Mac instead of Linux because it makes them more money :) Let's support them as much as we can!Quoting: MaCroX95Because on the site they have an option for the mac version and the developer of this version is Feral Interactive Limited.Quoting: tijderWell... Feral gets nothing for their Linux budget if you buy from such sites... Why do you guys embrace these kinds of practices and support people who don't support linux gaming! Either buy them from Feral Store for Linux or Steam for Linux because that's the only way that Feral gets rewarded for bringing games to Linux. If you don't want to spend so much wait for the sales on Feral store and Steam. Otherwise you're just supporting Windows gaming.Quoting: morbiusExpected Life is Strange to be on sale, disappointed that it isn't. No other game I want is on significant sale either. I should really pick up Metro Redux games, but I won't be able to play them before I buy a new computer anyway, so there is no rush. You can buy it here: https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/life-is-strange-complete-season/ [External Link]

Quoting: TcheyFeral = 30€They get the most if you buy them from Feral store, and they have sales too :) But honestly I rather buy 1 game on Feral store than 6 of them on such sites... sure it's same you can play them but that is the most that I can do for community, if we support them well they will bring us more games and better and better ports, so watch who you are giving your money to :) Don't support those who don't support us!
Steam Halloween sales = 15€
GMG = 7€
I'm struggling, not to buy it, or to by it cheap "for Windows", as i can't afford buying a game before next Xmas.
When i buy my foor a little more expensive too support local and organic, the final product is not the same. A plastic tasteless tomatoe, or a delicious one for 30% more.
But the game is the game, same exact final product...
Midway, if i buy it on Steam, what is the part going to Feral ?
EDIT: If you want feral to still get your contribution buy it on Steam on linux and PLAY IT ON LINUX, this way feral still gets something as far as I know :)

Quoting: TcheyIs it trusty : https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/mad-max/ [External Link] About 7€ ? I usually buy on Steam, Humble, GoG or dev websites. If you buy it there no money goes to Feral and the key counts as a Windows sale... So you're basically supporting Windows gaming instead of Feral, the great porting team... I also don't currently have enough to buy Mad Max, but I'm definitely getting it from Feral store.
Why Linux games often perform worse than on Windows

But yeah we all embrace complete openness including Valve and hoping that people will see how limiting proprietary systems actually are but that's probably not happening any time soon because of the commercial reasons.

Quoting: skinnyrafI agree with your point it's a great one... Microsoft has been doing that for years and now since Win8 came out they went too far... If people who buy Steam machines would get system like SteamOS preinstalled and not having a chance to install Windows on it it would embrace linux gaming and getting to know Linux by the users who use them. As I have noticed when I was making the switch... When I had dual-boot I always ended up going back to Windows because it has been the "safe spot" for me, later I just purged all my Windows partitions and just threw myself into a new environment and only then discovered the true beauty of Linux. I think that if Valve embraced usage of Linux on their custom-built hardware with purpose. it is way less intrusive comparing to what kind of terror Microsoft is doing at the very moment.Quoting: MaCroX95I would really like to see Valve making Steam machines OS locked to SteamOS because this is what would give them clear proof of how many people only on their behalf use Linux-based distro for gaming... Yes it would be a Microsoft-like move but it would be more effective than letting people to buy SteamOS powered steam machines and then give them right to just put Win10 on there...Talk about becoming monsters you're trying to fight.
So, you propose to lock down machines that were specifically created to foster openness of the PC platform? You propose to lock down machines running a system that is most often a victim to MS locking down PCs and advertised as the way to secure oneself from suffering a lock-in?
Interesting :)
BTW., Valve does not need to do this to have any "clear proof". Just put some data identifying Steam Machines and/or SteamOS in telemetry they collect anyway - or modify the hardware survey to display on SteamOS.
But yeah we all embrace complete openness including Valve and hoping that people will see how limiting proprietary systems actually are but that's probably not happening any time soon because of the commercial reasons.

Quoting: EikeThis needed to be done :D And what Feral and Aspyr are doing also needs to be done, we would need a few more companies like them and we would probably have all the AAA titles :D Big cheers to Feral Interactive, Aspyr Media, Valve! You guys make this whole thing possible to have a free open-source OS and still play great games like we would on "you know what"! :DQuoting: SilelmotBut am I wrong to say all this positive developement across the gaming-scene of linux started with steamos?Without Valve's involvement, I would still run this other OS for gaming.
Why Linux games often perform worse than on Windows

OP, great topic I agree with majority of things. Linux drivers for desktop PCs already perform much better on OpenGL and Vulkan. Too bad that it is not the case with the Laptops :( They tend to overheat more and perform less... If they made games from the ground up for Linux and also make game-ready drivers for Linux, imagine what kind of a performance boost would it have against Windows... They should actually consider writing for SteamOS and Vulkan because this way they could in fact get much better performances on worse hardware.

Quoting: HoriIt's unfortunate that many games perform worse on Linux than Windows but it's to be expected! We're a new platform (in the gaming industry), so it WILL TAKE TIME for developers to get used to it, for the graphics APIs to evolve to support the demand, and for developer tools to evolve as well but mostly to appear in the first place, because many needed tools are simply inexistent here.It will not just take time, it will take PEOPLE and PURCHASES to force developers to do something good for their greedy pockets. If they prduce for a few thousand people they will never even consider Vulkan as they didn't OpenGL for games... I would really like to see Valve making Steam machines OS locked to SteamOS because this is what would give them clear proof of how many people only on their behalf use Linux-based distro for gaming... Yes it would be a Microsoft-like move but it would be more effective than letting people to buy SteamOS powered steam machines and then give them right to just put Win10 on there... If they want Win10 on that thing they can still custom-build a console like PC that comes without OS and is not called a Steam machine. I played a few games on PS4 and I can honestly say that it performs a lot worse than my Linux gaming PC (I know that hardware is not comparable...). But people cannot upgrade it and it works like Plug and Play and they use PS4 custom OS because it's easy to use and works eventhough performance wise it cannot match the PC. Valve should really consider doing the same thing with Steam machines... Steam Big Picture mode is great, they should add a few apps and some more features and start making a new community (SteamOS one) and than in combination with us (desktop linux users) developers would have clear numbers and evidence that Linux gaming does exist and needs to be promoted and games need to be built from the ground up.
I personally am for more ports even if they perform worse... as long as they are playable and, as you said, they offer a good experience. There's no other way!

Quoting: OLucasZanellaWhile it is great to see Valve showing VR on Linux it def was a funny thing for the so called Linux haters there. "Oh look, Valve is showing VR on their little platform after we've had it already for like a year or more hahahah."Well they have their own platform that is stable, open for developers and has a huge potential... This could become really appealing to developers since they still get their support and gameDB that users love. If Microsoft does keep closing things down and bloating Win10 with the Windows store SteamOS could take off quickly. The only downside is that big AAA titles are ports and their performance still lacks behind a bit. They are great to have here but it reflects to Windows users that "Linux sucks for gaming". But eventually the gap is closing because as people buy new hardware they don't care much about whether the games work on 70 or 80 fps but does make a difference if it is 20 vs 30... If the Vulkan gets adopted Linux gaming would skyrocket because not only we would get more titles but ones that we don't get would be playable on Wine much easier and with better performance than dx games
I sincerely doubt that there will be much more games going to VR Linux, I mean, Valve basically just gave them a head start and let them create their engines and things that don't support Linux. Now "it is just hard to port them to linux tho, and there is no market tho."
Unless the Linux app comes with extra features it was just a really long shoe-shooting.

I really wish to believe that developers will start pushing Linux more as they see how viable of a platform SteamOS has become due to efforts of Valve, Feral and other awesome porting companies... They don't need to push linux as a whole, just support SteamOS and we would have a temporary solution for even more people to switch to Linux and embrace Linux gaming even more. With such positive experiences from these kind of things they might see that Vulkan and Cross-platform support is the way to go for the future :)
I agree, RocketLeague is a great port! Works flawlessly, we already have majority of e-sport titles availible Dota 2, CS GO (I'd love to see source 2/Vulkan rework), Hearthstone (Wine), League of Legends (Wine)... I really hope that we will see better Vulkan adoption from the developers in the future
