Editorial: On paying for Linux games when you already have a Windows version

This topic is very complicated. Years ago, I made that call. I only support/buy/use a game if it has a Linux release that I can play @ that moment.

Everything else in between ain't for me.

SDL2 Gamepad Tool, an alternative to Steam Big Picture configurator
9 March 2017 at 2:03 pm UTC

Quoting: ripperAs someone who owns a gamepad but uses it rarely and never used any "configuration tool", what is this good for? Most games allow you to define the button actions in the game config menu, so why is this better/more useful/different? Thanks for explanation.

Tools like this are great for many reasons

1) Many games do not support gamepads @ all

Which means you can make a game work with gamepads even when gamepads are not supported.

2) Each gamepad is different and developers usually support on for popular gamepads

This means you can take advantage gamepad features on ANY gamepad whether it's popular or not.

3) Predefined motions

Using tools like this can setup game combos with a button. So if you are playing a fighting game and are having issues with certain movies - you can program a button to be that exact move to help you learn it or use it better.

This is what I use and it is great. I have all kinds of gamepads from namebrand stuff to "literally" no name brands and this helps configures them all.

Quoting: KelsI really wish the client would detect that I'm running Linux, and stop offering me non-Linux games in the frontpage. Out of the 10 "Recommended for you" games, only half of them have the penguin icon. The ratio is even lower in the "Latest featured games" section. Admittedly it took Steam a while to start separating like that, but I'd hope Itch would learn from Valve's mistakes.
Your wish is my command. I've just pushed out an update that will only show games that are available for your platform on the app's homepage. Tell me if you can think of any other things to change.

I'm a little ashamed we didn't do this sooner since I even do all my development on linux.

This is freaking great! Excellent work. I picked up 1 title from itch awhile back now this makes it so much easier to get others!

Some thoughts on switching from Ubuntu to Antergos for Linux gaming
19 January 2017 at 6:44 pm UTC

Quoting: JudasIscariotI don't know about Vsync but as someone who uses Antergos daily since I first installed it, our Linux installers have no issues installing on Antergos. I've verified this with quite a few Linux native games myself :)

I am going to build a side gaming rig this weekend and test it out.

Some thoughts on switching from Ubuntu to Antergos for Linux gaming
19 January 2017 at 12:16 pm UTC

I've been on Ubuntu Mate for about 2 years now. Left Linux Mint on my main gaming rig. I use Lubuntu on some of my older rigs and machines. I've not had any issues with Pulse Audio or the like. Were you are on Ubuntu or some derivative? I've found Ubuntu problematic for me in the past. The DE does not help me get to what I need to go and there are many lib files I had to install to game properly.

I have questions for Antergos users:

* How are installs from GOG library?
* Is Vsync automatically dealt with like on Ubuntu Mate?

Wine Staging 2.0-rc5 released, better support for Origin, GOG Galaxy and more

I log on to Origin when they give out free games in hopes of a future Linux release. That's about it with them.

Itch.io is really growing on me. I recently purchased a game to show my support towards a dev. The amount of freeware that is available and working is a good catch. They also have multiplayer versions of games that are either single player only on STEAM or only allow 2 to 4 players while itch.io offers up to 8 players.

There are a lot of devs on there using Linux too. I hope that it gets even more support.
