I was thinking to buy Robocop: Rogue City on Steam, then I found it on GamerThor site a couple of pounds cheaper (so I got it there instead). I did pick up Tainted Grail: Conquest (80% discount), Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem (90% discount) and The Outer Worlds (75% discount) on Steam.

I've been giving it a try and the overall concept is decent and this style of game appeals to me. However, the way the game cuts out the lights (so you can't see your path back to base) and other minor irritations are impediments to enjoyment.

For me, I very much appreciate Valve's emphasis on the fact that the SteamDeck is *your* device. If you want to put in a third party M.2 drive, you can. If you want to upgrade storage with a microSD, you can. If you want to replace the joysticks/battery/other internals, you can get inside easily enough (screws, not glue).

Also, if you *don't* want to run SteamOS on it, then you are *not* locked into that OS. You can install Linux on it, you can install Windows on it. You can probably install BSD or Android onto it.

I'm also very happy that the Deck hardware, via official SteamDock or third-party usb-c dock, allows you to transform the SteamDeck into a 'desktop' computer where you can plug in keyboard/mouse/external joypads and an external display.

Practically every other console on the market is a scumbag money-grab, where you are locked into an ecosystem and have no say over your own property.

I'm liking the look of Thaumaturge, Shadow's Gambit, Evil West, Ultros, and the rest seem okay. Unlike last month, I don't own any of the titles yet. There's a good chance I'm going to jump on this one.

The demo gives you a decent opportunity to give the game a try-out. The download is tiny, so if you're curious, see for yourself. It is quite easy to get into, and I found it grew on me over the course of playing a number of runs.

Recommendations to the developer:

- Suggest adding cursor keys as an alternative to mouse-control for more choice. (This might also help out people with genuine accessibility problems, not just keyboard addicts.)

- I found it fairly frustrating to have one's weapons run out before the end of a level, so I'd have a perpetual low-damage weapon instead of no weapon whatsoever. Alternatively, make it so that damaging boxes or barrels doesn't use up your weapon.

EDIT: Played some more and spotted what seems to be a minor bug in the (demo) game. With the Rogue character, I didn't successfully complete a dungeon, and it offers to backtrack. I carried out the backtrack, completed the dungeon successfully and wasn't presented with the dungeon exit, but given a repeat backtrack again. (I completed the dungeon again, and was offered yet another backtrack.) A problem like this is usually resolved by quitting and starting a fresh run.

EDIT 2: Yes, it is a good game and it is continuing to grow on me. The demo has a decent amount of content. Maybe I was wrong about the backtrack 'bug' earlier. The backtrack might eventually resolve itself (by offering an exit) after multiple goes backward (e.g. 1 step forward, 2 steps back, heh).

I was also a little unfair with my assertion that weapon depletion was spoiling the game. It is clear that you have to look multiple steps into the future (like Chess) and match up weapon with target at each point. Still, I tend to prefer not being exasperated by game mechanics that rob me of a win.

I'd rather they just give us a completely new game rather than remastering the old one, and then heaping modern game pricing on top of it. (Basically, the remastered game is not worth the money they are asking, because they didn't need story writers, game designers, and can probably remaster the original with a skeleton-crew of developers and artists, and then charge top-dollar for it).
