Waiting with bated breath for the next Humble Monthly early-bird reveal (7-ish hours away). [Only to be disappointed by another Windows-only title ~ well, hopefully not]

Beep boop the Feral Interactive port radar has a UFO sighting for a new Linux port
1 June 2018 at 2:10 am UTC Likes: 6

I've been thinking about and looking into the Feral Radar clues that are given. I know that others have already mentioned these findings, but I'm just using them here in my overall pitch. Noting that I started a number of hours ago, then had a short sleep, and have only just returned to it. Also noting that I was intending to spend my evening doing other things than wrack my brains over clues like this!

1. The quote "Proud Throne of Lucifer"
- comes from John Milton's Poem "Paradise Lost".
- The Quote: "about the walls of Pandemonium, city and proud seat of Lucifer".

2. The Hellish painting
- Named Pandemonium, and painted by John Martin in 1841.
- It was one of many paintings based on Milton's Paradise Lost.
- Painter William Blake created many of the other Paradise Lost paintings.

Some interesting ancillary information:

The "Lucifer" word literally means "Light Bearer" from the Latin. Also, associated with "Morning Star" and "the planet Venus".
Lucifer is one of the many names of Satan.
Lucifer was the Brightest Angel in Heaven, before his Fall from Grace (becoming Satan).
Lots of other material about Lucifer is here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucifer

Pandemonium is the Capital of Hell in John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost, or rather Satan's Throne or Satan's seat.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pand%C3%A6monium_(Paradise_Lost)

Popular culture influenced by Paradise Lost:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise_Lost_in_popular_culture
(There are a few games mentioned here, e.g. Darksiders and Deus Ex)

The clues suggest "Satan's Throne/Satan's Seat" to me, i.e. The prime location where Satan's influence was centred on Earth.

If one searches for "Satan's Throne", it leads to the ancient city Pergamon where the Pergamon Altar (Satan's Throne) was sited.
Pergamon was a place of sin, idolatry and debauchery, worshipping all manner of gods (paganism), Greek ones, Roman ones, etc.

The Pergamon Altar itself was a massive Altar, decorated with a frieze of Olympian (Greek) Gods in an epic war with a race of giants. In modern times, Pergamon is a city in Turkey, and the Pergamon Altar was excavated and moved to Museum Island in Berlin.

Moving on to games now. Well the first thing to say is that the clues are not really pushing me to choose a specific title.

The one title which seems to fit closest with the clues - It is very very unlikely to come to Linux:
God of War (2018 video game)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_War_(2018_video_game)
- Mixes Greek mythology (Olympian Gods) with Norse mythology (trolls, goblins, giants)
- Released by Sony, and on PS4 only... so.... hardly a perfect candidate for the Feral Radar guess.

Another title which (other people have mentioned) and slightly fits in with the clues:
Middle Earth: Shadow of War
- Noting that the main (god-like) Player Character fights Orcs (and other Giant-like creatures) in (somewhat) epic battles.
- This is a lot more likely than God of War, owing to the fact that "Shadow of Mordor" was ported to Linux before, by Feral.

Games with Hell and Demons - More potential titles:

- Shadow Warrior 2 (you fight demons and there are some Hellish places in this, and it is supposed to come to Linux eventually)
- Darksiders franchise
- Bayonetta
- DOOM (2016)
- Agony
- Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide
- Dark Souls franchise
- Final Fantasy XV (Reasons: Lucis kingdom, Lucian throne, getting plunged into eternal darkness, Niflheim = Hell in Norse myth, Square Enix)
- Elder Scrolls franchise (slightly joking, here, but mainly implying the very old game Oblivion)
- Tokyo Babel (Reason: Demons and angels in game, Babel is Earth-based equivalent city to Hell's Pandemonium)

Likely titles but where are the clues?:

- Shadow of the Tomb Raider (Well, for starters a lot of the game is expected to be based in Jungles in Mexico.)
- NieR: Automata (A decent Square Enix title, and lots of Feral ports of their games)
- Vampyr (Other Dontnod title has been ported by Feral before)

Anyone got further suggestions based on what I've shared? Normally, I'd work from both sides of the problem: Work out ideas from the clues. Work out possible game titles. And then try to match them up.

Just spotted "Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice" just mentioned before I pasted this. Yes, another Hell and Demons possible.

What Linux games are you looking forward to this year? Here's my top picks

Matching Liam in some of his titles:

Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass - definitely
Insomnia: The Ark - definitely
Battletech - maybe
We Happy Few - maybe

I've given up on "The Witcher 3" ever coming to Linux, but haven't given up on other titles.
e.g. I haven't given up all hope on "Shadow Warrior 2" yet, but the very long wait is disconcerting.
(Long waits do have the knock on benefit of large sale discounts, e.g. 60% or more.)

Very looking forward to "Into The Breach" when it finally makes it onto Linux.

Quite interested in "Underworld Ascendant" and how good it will be.

"Arakion: Book One" is just released in Early Access - watching that one.

I don't know if "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" is going to make it to Linux, but fingers-crossed :)
Another that I doubt will come to Linux, but love it... "Witchfire"... toes-crossed =P

And here are some others I've wish-listed:

EITR
Stoneshard
Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem - when the Linux port comes out
Bum Simulator

It's already on my wishlist. Watched a game-play video a few days ago, and quite like the premise. Although I'm not that keen on the timer-based approach, it looks like the timer won't be annoying like it is in many Free-2-Play mobile games.

Like the clean interface, and the fact that it encourages you to use your imagination as part of the gaming experience.

You can grab Arma 3 plus some DLC in a new Humble Bundle
29 May 2018 at 6:53 pm UTC

Excuse my ignorance on this, but can you play DayZ on Linux using Arma 3 as the engine?

Also, how good are the single player campaigns and maps (i.e. playing with bots OR as an individual). I'm not really into FPS games where you crawl around all the time sniping - used to call those players "campers" in the good old days. Or, where you have to lead a team / work with a team - more of a deathmatch / lone-wolf player, strafing with shotguns or rocket launchers.

Guns of Icarus Alliance is free to keep if you grab it on Steam before Tuesday

Quoting: fredrikfritteTried to install Steam and other addons on Ubuntu 18:04..no luck
Will grab this one on Win10 laptop...sucks

Problems getting Steam to work on your Linux? It does require 32 bit packages, so you might want to do this:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install steam

Also needs contrib and non-free repositories adding to /etc/apt/sources.lst (after "main" ).

The Humble Monthly Bundle just added two great Linux games
26 May 2018 at 5:48 pm UTC

As mentioned on GOL before (with lots of nuggets of information) I subcribed to the Yearly Subscription (which is a great way to get 12 individual monthly credits). I regularly pause and unpause the Monthly Bundle to suit my tastes. Usually pause just before payment goes through (close to end of the month) if they don't offer enough Linux games.

I was pausing this month, due to the main title being Destiny 2 which isn't on Linux. I already own Ken Follett's Pillars game, and not too bothered about Cook Serve Delicious 2 (I own the first in the series, and not played that yet). So, no need for me to unpause this month.

Also, there's only another 6 days before the new bundle comes out and looking forward to hearing what that has for the Early Reveal.

The Humble Store Spring Sale ends tomorrow, here's some last Linux picks

I've been grabbing deals on Fanatical, Humble, and chrono.gg

My latest Humble grab was "Space Grunts"

A highly recommended Humble grab is "Slay the Spire"

My most recent purchase is "Tower of Time" which is in a Flash Sale on chrono.gg at 40% discount. Very good discount for a month-old release.

Now, I've reached 800+ Linux titles in my Steam collection.

Open-world, vehicle sandbox adventure 'TerraTech' updated with online multiplayer & better performance
23 May 2018 at 1:22 am UTC

Interestingly, it is currently free-to-try for the next few days on Steam (as well as discounted if you buy it).

Not quite getting how they can be DRM-Free, and also give the game out for a free trial. Doesn't that mean a load of people will grab the game (in its current release state) and then keep and play it beyond the trial deadline?

Open-world roguelike RPG 'Stoneshard' will have Linux support, nearly hit the Kickstarter goal

Already on my wishlist. It's the sort of game I'd like, I can just tell.
