Observer is a fantastic brain-hacking horror adventure, my thoughts

Quoting: jensMay I ask how many Feral/Aspyr ports you have actually played to make such a bold statement?
You may. :)

OK, OK. I will not hide behind formal response and answer your true question.
Just FYI, I have none. And neither will have one at that rate. Yes, there is one exception (as was stated): "Layers of Fear" on GOG which does not interest me in the slightest. And as for Observer, Aspyr stated that "unfortunately, the game uses Steam connection to go to the title screen"! That is their reasoning to tie the game to Steam.

UPDATE: Actually, there is a movement! Developers said:

regarding Linux version on GOG. We shall see…

F1 2017 released for Linux as Feral Interactive’s first Vulkan-only title, here’s a port report

Quoting: AudiSee message below.

The difference is the Nvidia driver versions. Your video demo, they are using 384.90. Here, Liam was using the newer 387.22.

Feral has made a statement (read it on Phoronix), that the 387 has a regression. So, I would not be taking these numbers here into consideration. The performance is actually much better & closer to Windows.
Hmm…
Much better! That is at least acceptable, albeit Vulkan should be better than DirectX 11 (after all that is what it was invented for) and not worse.

Quoting: Power-Metal-GamesI hope this is your last comment here... Judging by some other benchmarks, the difference is not so big like here. It looks Feral done a really good job considering this is one of there's first Vulkan works.
Sorry, but your hope is futile.
Until you provide that "some other benchmarks", I'm believing Liam and not some random Internet guy/gal. Hope you have put your money where your mouth is and purchased that "really good job" from Feral® (along with new CPU and GPU to actually play it).

Quoting: ShmerlAspyr never properly explained, why they don't want to release it on GOG.
It seems Feral and Aspyr will never release anything outside of Steam just because.
This, coupled with the fact that their "ports" are of outrageous quality nearly makes these two companies my personal sworn enemies. Their actions are more harmful than beneficial to Linux ecosystem (IMO).

Well… Let's pretend for a minute I am using Steam (and in reality nothing short of threats of execution will force me to do that). So, according to the benchmark I am forced to buy twice as expensive hardware (or even make an upgrade in the first place!) compared to Windows version!

This is bad. Like, really bad! Feral should be disallowed from trashing Linux reputation with its "Feral-ports" any further.

Really, I'm on my last leg here trying not to swear. Really. Hope this is the last "port" from this studio. We don't need such piss-poor "ports", ever.

P.S. Sorry for the rant. Hope I didn't insult anyone.

The Untold Legacy, a story-rich action adventure game is on Kickstarter with Linux support

Quoting: IconicGamesHello Guys!
I just wanted to pop in and answer any questions you may have.
I saw you guys were interested in DRM free copies and just wanted to ask why it was a deal breaker?

Its honestly not something I have thought about. I had always imagined I would deliver the game in the end to backers in whatever way was most convenient for them.
Hello! Nice to see you here! First, let me wish you good luck once again!

No, onto the question…
The answer is twofold.
1) Regarding DRM per se I can not answer better than had been answered before. It just creates inconvenience for legal users while not really preventing piracy and there is no way I am paying for my own punishment while my friends are enjoying "pirated" product without that DRM BS, thank you very much. ;) I am no masochist.
2) And as for the Steam… I could say that Valve is "Microsoft #2" (as Gabe himself is from Microsoft and has the same corporate mindset) and its Steam service is a DRM, no better than "Microsoft Store" (which, ironically, Gaben despises so much)… But in reality it is all about exclusives. I hate exclusives, be it Windows exclusives or Steam ones. Just as the proverb goes, "don't put all eggs in one basket"! I was "excluded" from so many games due to platform so I will not support exclusiveness even when I'm "on the delivering side of the blow" for once. I'm not against Steam, I'm against Steam exclusive.

Hope that helps!

No DRM-free? Steam only? Well, good luck to them! Pass!

The Humble Down Under Bundle is a very good deal for Linux gamers
19 October 2017 at 8:14 pm UTC

Quoting: PitThose games quite obviously do not have any DRM-free version, but are steam-only. GOG is a DRM-free shop.
Something doesn't add up. "Those games" have "DRM-free" versions for Windows™ (on GOG), yet no DRM-free (or… any, actually) version for Linux. How so?
Let's stop beating around the bush here. "Those games" require DRM for on-line mode. They rely on Steamworks™ on Steam™ and GOG was happy to oblige by providing Galaxy™ DRM for Windows™ and "Mac OS X". But not for Linux, and that's why "those games" are not on GOG for Linux.

In other words, GOG allowed DRMed games on its store. "Armello DRM-Free Edition" fiasco was a lesson for them: you either provide DRM to satisfy developers or don't accept a game at all; no compromises here. And GOG desperately wants more developers so it agreed to add DRM mechanism to the store.

Now, let's stop spreading this "GOG is the prophet of DRM-FREEDOM" BS.

Quoting: RafiLinuxSimply put they lie to the video gaming community for their personal gain.
Not in this particular deal. And law has it, one can not be punished (or judged) twice for the same crime.
Quoting: RafiLinuxI just read that, they gave people their money back...What's the issue?
Same old story. If you excuse me, simply put they lie to the video gaming community for their personal gain by "calling night a day" and masking reduced (due to developer's insistence on DRM) half-functional version without support as "DRM Free Edition", thus covering filthy developer and not voiding it's contract (and at the same time claming DRM-free adherence) because money is money (for them). Sure, they went back on this and under the pressure from customers removed this scam from the store, but the damage had been done.

Quoting: RafiLinuxMaybe but how so from your POV?
"Nothing personal, it is just business."
Quoting: RafiLinuxIf a company does business in a way that I am morally against and I do not want to support them is this now considered hatred and vengeance?
What exactly is so "morally unacceptable" in this particular deal? The fact that they do not provide DRM-free or Linux versions for all games in the bundle?
Quoting: RafiLinux…if the game supports Linux and I like the game, then I will probably support it.
The games in the bundle are for Linux and DRM-free. Yet, you will not "support" (in the form of purchasing?) them… Well, maybe you just don't like them… But that has nothing to do with IGN or Humble Inc.… Oh, wait!
Quoting: RafiLinuxWhile the deal is good, if I wanted those games in a DRM-FREE format I will look for them on itch.io and/or GOG.
So… this is not about personal taste in games but IGN per se.
Quoting: RafiLinuxLet me know when IGN comes out and says that they WILL support Linux and DRM-FREE gaming with some clear goals and milestones with some kind of checks/balances in place and I will give them another look.
I'll try to not forget to inform you on such a development, but no promises! OK? :D
Quoting: RafiLinuxTil then I will continue to support Linux Gaming as I see fit.
That is your right and I am in no position to scold you on that. But, please, try to be aware of the fact that your actions are motivated by personal feelings (about past IGN's actions) and not rational thoughts about current event.
Quoting: AnxiousInfusionNot so Humble anymore will do just fine w/out me.
I like that name! "Not so Humble Inc." :P Sounds right!

P.S. I am also not above this: I will not give any money to "Larian Studios" and most probably will not buy "Divinity: Original Sin" despite its availability on Linux due to their actions (which I took as a personal insult) regarding the release of Linux version.

P.P.S. GOG… Armello… Does it sound any bells??? Like, this story? Yet, despite all of this GOG is totally OK to get DRM-FREE games, unlike despicable "Humble IGN"…
