I hope they will do a linux launcher, because it is a bit annoying to redownload the whole game every update. I know there are some community made launcher, but would be preferable to have an official client. Otherwise the game is really a good return to the good old unreal tournament for now, with many of the old maps.

Very nice to come back from work and to have a nice article to read, written by a nice person who asks good questions to nice people, who does nice work for people who likes nice games, and all that within a nice commnunity :)
Cheers to Feral and Liam, you've all brought so much to us linux gamers within the last year. Keep up the very good work and good luck with your Vulkan implementation!

We really need that Vulkan on unreal engine to have full linux support. It's also good to have VR from the beginning on linux. I don't know whether it will be massively adopted, but if it is the case it will a good point for Linux in the future.
Space sandbox game 'Avorion' has a whopper of an update, considering getting a server for it

I bought the game and really like it as well. I don't think I will have enough time to invest into it, but it would be nice to have a gol server, especially if the new update encourage team play, which was not the case earlier.

If it's like Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle, the linux version will come out later, there should also probably be a discount at that time. If it's a sure day 1 Linux I would pre order but would not bet on it.
Valve have hired another developer to work on Linux graphics drivers

The effort from Valve seems to be more than just words. It would be great that people understand what is microsoft purpose with windows 10. It is simply about dispossessing users from their own hardware and datas on the long term. They want you to buy just a terminal that you will rent and on which everything is streamed from microsoft cloud servers including your personnal datas, applications, games... and that you will have to pay/rent as well.

Quick update for G29:
FFB works great, I put it in PS3 mode. It seems to be working even better than on windows at some point (asphalt in monte carlo or wales mud).
Some vibrations kind of lack but in my case it is working a lot better than on windows 10 where the wheel was going crazy and shaking from one side to the other on its own. Also you can compensate most of the official drivers lack in the advanced setup.
Current setup, I will improve it later:
FOV: 0.7
Steering sensivity 55%
steering linearity 40%
steering deadzone 0
steering saturation 30 % *
The rest of the setup is more personnal, on the G29 the brake pedal is very hard, so I put:
Breaking deadzone: 0%
Braking saturation: 50 %
Throttle deadzone: 5%
Throttle saturation: 85%
Haven’t tried the clutch yet. Generally I put a 5% deadzone and only 25 % saturation.
FFB:
Suspension: 67%
Tire slip: 80%
Collision: 54%
*Maximum rotation of the wheel is 900°. On g29 the wheel is a bit smaller than a real one, and it feels more natural with lower rotation like 270° or 320°. To apply this on linux you have to go to advanced controller settings and for instance, take 30 % of steering saturation to make it 270°
These setups are temporary as I’m trying to get the best FFB sensation without making it impossible to drive.
Note that any change on Steering option appart from deadzone will change the FFB effect.

Just a quick bench with 4 runs each with the following specs:
Hardware
I7-2600 @3,8GHz
12GB DDR3 1333MHz
GTX970 MSI Gaming
Screen Resolution 1440*900
Windows 7 64bit : Drivers 378.66 HDD :Seagate 7200,14 1Tb
Linux Mint 18.1 64Bit : Drivers 367.57 and 375.29 HDD : 2Tb Caviar Green
I'm trying to get my savegame from windows, with no success yet :p
As you can see on my system, there is only 30% difference in fps. I observed the same with the minimum and maximum fps.
Note that I upgraded from mint 18 without clean install, and that linux HDD is a little slower than the one for windows. Also I am not sure whether the MSI version is also overclocked by default on Linux. Without taking those small details into account, I still I think it is a very good port.

I have the G29, and also a dusty windows partition. I will tell you tonight when I'm back from work, how does it work. I'll give a quick round of bench with MSAAx4 on windows and then compare with linux. But from what Liam just posted, I think the performances are probably some of the greatest ever seen on a feral port.
I will also probably in few days give my optimised settings for FFB (if it works.)
@Liam I play the game since a while, and I found your review pretty accurate. You highlighted all that needs to be mentioned about this game. Very good job!
Can't wait to play it ^^

There is quite a drop in wheels at the moment, transition between new models and ancient ones. There use to be the Logitech Driving Force GT around 90€, but it isn't produced anymore, and prices raised quuite a bit, so maybe a new model will come.
Otherwise you have to go with thrustmaster T150, but I can't remember if it works with linux version. The top model from Logitech G29/G290 is 209€ in french amazon shop (use to be 400€), if you can find it the same price in your country it is really worthy. Otherwise a bit too expensive.
