One person that created this fork https://github.com/wine-staging/wine-staging/

It is not bad if it is over as long as the patches are upstreamed.

I think the main problem is, that there is no easy working repository for 3.x any more. I didn't test the stable branch so far, but I would expect the same problems I had with 3.1. All this is time consuming. In that time I prefer to play native Linux games and wait until there is a well maintained repository for gamers again. I, for my part, would pay for it as long as the results are published under the same license as Wine. Patreon?

So let's see what Alistair makes of his fork and how many patches land upstream in the near future

Thanks for the info. But who is Alistair?

It's a pity that wine staging is no longer possible.

I try to switch to wine-devel but it don't works on my system. It missed a vulkan DLL and gave me lot of errors. So I go back to wine-staging. But wine-staging stucks at 2.21, so I can't use this new improvements.

With wine-devel I don't even can run Doom 2016, which runs under staging for over a year without any problems. Am I the only one with problems like this? Xubuntu 17.10, Nvidia driver 387.34.

I would like to try GTA V, for example. But with 3.1 it doesn't even starts. I can't even get to the backscreen. Somehow I get the impression that we have reached the point again, where you have again to test and configure a lot more by yourself.

Maybe that's why nothing new appears in staging. The old staging version is still very stable. I'm now waiting for 4.0, which should be released next year. Maybe I can finally play GTA V with that.

Quoting: 1xokEDIT: Actually, it's normal, because they had announced that the 2.21 will be the last staging package for the 2er Realese. But the 3.1 should appear again.

Could you point to any source that proves that?

I just remember it. They wanted to concentrate on the stable release. I think I read it on GOL. But maybe I remember wrong.

In any case, no staging has been published since October. If 3.1 doesn't appear now, the staging branch makes little sense. Staging now delivers a much older version than stable.

The Ubuntu staging packages from WineHQ Builds are still on 2.21. Haven't been updated in three months:

https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/

Hopefully there will be an update soon. I would like to play GTA V under Linux. The ALT+Enter Hack seems to work poorly with Nvidia cards. I haven't been able to do it yet. I always land on a black screen and only hear the music.

But it's good to know they finally fixed the problem.

Quoting: MustDDid refund my preorder, because of limited rail crossing capabilities (compared to transport fever) and game crash without any information on 1-10 min ingame. Ubu16.04.4.

Microsoft is rumoured to be looking to buy Valve, EA and others

The corporate culture of Valve and Microsoft is fundamentally different.

All you have to do is look at the manual for new Valve employees:

http://www.valvesoftware.com/company/Valve_Handbook_LowRes.pdf

No one at Valve would develop anything just because the management wanted it. Of course, Microsoft could develop HL3 if they owned the rights to the trademark. But there would be nothing left but the name. Most Valve employees would probably just turn to new jobs and other things.

It could also be that someone wants to damage the trust in Valve as an independent platform by spreading such rumors.

SteamOS has a fresh beta update with some major package updates

Quoting: liamdaweWhat are your hopes for SteamOS/Steam Machines in 2018?

A small AMD-based Steam Machine would be very good for children. But it should also be open, so that e. g. Minecraft runs on it. In my opinion, the games on Linux are better for children than on PlayStation and sometimes even better than on the Switch. Minecraft mods are very popular with children. Most mods do not run on the normal consoles. You don't get to the public Minecraft servers either. For the children, this is just as important as PUBG or CSGO for the elderly.

Basically, I think that something like the Ataribox would be very good. It just shouldn't be from today's Atari.;)

Valve and all the others have done fantastic work over the last three years. If you look at what has been achieved, however, you also realize how much Linux has been missing in 2015 to be a viable Gaming alternative.

Wine 3.0 RC3 is now available, brings even more bug fixes

Could it be there is no PPA release (https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu) for 2.22 because of Wine 3.0?

I am curious to see if 3.0 changes the performance and graphic errors of GTA V.

Anyway, Wine is a great thing.

Is the Christmas content avaiable on Linux too over Christmas? Sorry had no time to check. Busy. But I already own this game (and love it).
