Steam Play Proton 6.3-6 is out now with lots of fixes and new game support

Quoting: sigmichKotor1, great. Now I'm playing it with gog release using wine.

I've tried it now quickly with proton and it seems fine albeit when tried to switch antialiasing on, textures are gone only white colour instead.
You might wanna report this to DXVK https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk [External Link] (if there isn’t already an issue report) or try DXVK master first. Based on 30 seconds internet research this games uses D3D9.

Unreal Engine 4.27 is out now from Epic Games with plenty of Linux improvements

Really not sure, but I could imagine that things like Stadia might be a good motivation for UE to improve on the Linux front. May be those above are already a follow up on that.

No exposure to Microsoft code or reverse-engineering of Microsoft software
Interesting, I thought wine worked reversing engineering the calls from the software. I think this may be about only "Microsoft Software" and not windows only programs in general?
They are reimplementing based on the public api’s. Trying to restore the original source, what reverse engineering would be, would be I guess legally very questioning.

Having VR issues on Linux? You should look to disable async reprojection

I hope this will be resolved anytime soon, actually quite a shame that VR on Linux broke recently that much :(

Wayland gets DRM lease protocol support to help VR on Linux
10 Aug 2021 at 6:18 pm UTC

Quoting: haagchCurrently SteamVR has no explicit wayland support, it only works through xwayland.

Direct mode with xwayland is part of this current effort and people have been successful in using SteamVR with direct mode with xwayland. Not sure what exactly is needed for it to work but I believe it's the wayland protocol support, the protocol implementation in the wayland compositors and an implementation in xwayland.
Thanks a lot for your insights. Cool to read that the missing bits and pieces are likely in the open source area.

Wayland gets DRM lease protocol support to help VR on Linux

Does SteamVR needs to support this explicitly as well or is it enough for VR on Wayland once compositors (Gnome Mutter etc) have implemented this?

I'm now a true convert after using a Vertical Mouse
4 Aug 2021 at 7:29 pm UTC

I went for a Wacom tablet as mouse replacement several years ago also due taking off some strain off my hand. Works cool once you get used to it, also for lefties :).
Obviously it is not suited for gaming with the exception of the likes of Civ or point & click things (absolute positioning!), but therefore I’ve settled with a controller (or wheel).

(Tbf, I hope at some point that tablets with a 21 by 9 aspect ratio become available, haven’t seen any yet)

Ryan Gordon and Ethan Lee on Proton and the Steam Deck

Quoting: KuJoCheck out the releases from Feral Interactive. The number of ports has been drastically reduced. This is certainly also due to Proton ... because if it runs well with Proton, then you don't need a port to play a game on Linux anymore.
You assume a correlation between Feral's release reduction and the raise of Proton.
But you don't consider the fact that Feral may have been asked/pushed by Valve to make some ports. If valve is the reason they ported to Linux, and taking into account the fact that we see Valve putting efforts to make games work with wine, it could also be that it's Valve strategy that is at play, not the existence of Proton being a reason "not to port anymore because it works with Proton"

Marc worked for Feral, this post gives some insights about the difficulties they had.

It's an interesting read and adds another perspective to that discussion.

Given their knowledge, would be cool if both get hired by Valve to help getting Proton even better into shape. That said, I also understand Ethan's side, from his own perspective, his very specialized skills might be less needed when his customers go for Proton. Though no idea actually how booming his own business had been in the past and how his future would have looked like without Proton.

As a user, I'm still thinking developer support and visibility of Linux as a gaming OS are the most important things in the long run. I don't mind all the translation layers in-between, as long as it works the same (or with a small performance penalty) as on other platforms.
