Quoting: EikeI don't understand you negativity. What are you fearing?
I guess Nvidia taking over the world ;)

On a more serious note, I guess it is no secret that our @Shmerl has a very strong distaste of closed source technology coming from the likes of Nvidia or Microsoft. I guess he is either trying to use every argument to convince users to stay away from it, or his opinion is already that biased due to knowing where it comes from that he can't objectively reason anymore. Could also be both.

@Shmerl, please don't take it personally, I value your knowledge for everything concerning Open Source technology. To quote another user, please "define yourself by the things you love and not by the thing you hate", I would recommend you to stay away from topics with the green banner on it.

There is also a new version of the driver from the Vulkan Developement branch out: version 450.56.01, see
https://developer.nvidia.com/vulkan-driver [External Link]

Very tempting to install this one from the installer, though I'm afraid that removing it and going back to a driver from repositories fails. Does anyone has experience with that? Fedora 32 here.

The changes needed for RDR2 are not in this release https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3291#issuecomment-656278495 [External Link]

I hope it wont take another major version until that happens. Fortunately my backlog of games is still filled :)

Cheers and thanks a lot for keeping GOL such a friendly place (which I guess isn't easy)!

NVIDIA released a big new mainline Linux Beta Driver 450.51

I just grabbed RDR2 during the Steam sales. It runs pretty cool after a bit of tinkering (custom Proton version, command line arguments for my screen resolution and extra Gnome Extension for window placement). But since I'm on the stable drivers (440.100), frames per seconds are rather bad. I'm really hoping that the first non-beta release of these 450 driver contains the RDR2 fixes from 440.66.15.

I would love to know which version of the Vulkan branch got merged into this one.
Is `VK_EXT_extended_dynamic_state` already included (from 440.66.17)? If not, is this version suitable for RDR2 (like 440.66.15)?

Quoting: ShabbyXYou would think Valve could have just nicely asked them to use their Vulkan-only path if they detected wine, and let proton deal with potential issues.

Would have taken probably one hour for the develpers to add an 'if (wine)' in the code.
You can't assume such things. It's probably much more than an if. And when companies release products, they need to support them as well, they can't just release and forget. It has to be tested, and go through a lengthy and rigurous process, and then supported since people will assuredly have all kinds of issues running it.

It's expensive, and even the development part it's probably complicated. Who knows how they wrote that code. And who knows if they have anyone there with any Linux experience alone, let alone game development for Linux.
They can't just "blindly" add code to their game and hope it works.
They also can't have someone from the outside have access to their code, and even if they did they'd have to hope they did a good job and nothing bad will happen.

They'd pretty much have to go all in with a Linux version.
Exactly. From my experience: if you are an outsider of whatever domain, never assume that things are simple. It is not.

Actually this applies to nearly everything in life imho. Placing traffic lights e.g. seems a simple thing, but I'm absolutely sure there are lots of things involved an outsider just doesn't see of would think of.
