Linux Game Sales Statistics From Multiple Developers Part 2
12 Feb 2014 at 11:56 am UTC

I don't think people understand. Microsoft has fought tooth and nail to convince developers their platform should be the only platform to develop for. They have backed it up by pushing kick-backs (Money) to developers to not only develop solely for Windows but to also publicly crucify Open Source.

In using Windows, you become part of the problem. You inadvertently tell developers you want Windows only Software and Games. By buying and playing Games on Windows, you contribute to Microsoft's success on it's war with Linux, Open Source and Multi-platform.

DirectX, Basic, XNA, crippled OpenGL, back-channel funding, SCO; when is it going to sink in people? When it's too late?.

Linux Game Sales Statistics From Multiple Developers

To play devils advocate: If I were looking at those numbers trying to decide if I wanted to port my Game to Linux; I would be pretty discouraged right now and would probably decide not to.

As for my personal opinion: Windows is a majority of the Market, most people don't know what Linux is nor do they care if Windows has an NSA backdoor or if Windows killed their Cat. Generally people are ignorant and afraid of change even if it's good. Unfortunately, I don't think Steam Machines is going to change their mind.

If any Developers are reading this: We Linux users are the ones who woke up from our nightmare in the Matrix, we broke free from the chains of slavery. We are grateful that, while you may still live in the Matrix, you can see the light on the other side and are supplying us with the tools we need to wake more up from their nightmare. Thank you.

Does it have Custom Skirmish or Sandbox type modes vs AI? I can't seem to find an answer.

ID Software Moving Further Away From Linux, QuakeLive Going Native
8 Nov 2013 at 2:42 pm UTC

Sadly, ID is pretty irrelevant now. Quake Live looks like Quake 3, so why not just play Quake 3, It works and I see plenty of severs with no silly sub needed.

I don't see ID making it in the future gaming industry by only supporting one platform. I expect them to disappear as a company in the coming years.

Steam For Linux Has Its First Birthday Today!

Thanks for that DRM Free list scaine, that was news to me. Actually Hamish, I have a 6670 and the Open Source Radeon drivers work really good, in some instances, better than fglrx. Nothing to be ashamed of, and if anything it's Nvidia who should be ashamed not to even have an Open Source driver of their own, some guys had to reverse engineer one.

I think Valve replied once via an Email if they ever went out of business, they have a plan in place that will let everyone continue to enjoy their games. Whoever that was replied to my comment about SteamOS games working on regular distros; what people say and what actually happens are two different things. I'll believe it when I see it.

So happy Birthday Steam for Linux, but Mike Frett needs some clarification before his usage of Steam continues.

Steam For Linux Has Its First Birthday Today!

Well I was a HUGE supporter because it meant more Games and AAA titles. I racked up over 100 games before my brain kicked in and asked why I can't download a stand-alone version like Desura offers. And now with all the confusion with the SteamOS being a totally new flavor for devs to support, questions concerning whether those titles made for SteamOS will even arrive for regular distros have popped up.

I made a harsh comment on reddit about Steam when my brain wasn't in gear and I'm sure I was assaulted about it (I never checked) but I don't really care since I'm probably the only member there who actually uses Linux full time. I have a vested interest in Linux because I have no fall-back platform like they probably do. So I actually care if somebody is trying to step on our backs and use us. I care about Linux, but I can't say the same about Steam anymore at least until everything is crystal clear. So i won't be buying anymore games there and have been asking devs if they have stand-alone versions I can buy direct.

Obviously this is my personal opinion and preference.

@SteamPenguin: I use Steam frequently, but I do think a lot about it in future-tense. Anything bad can happen at any time, say for example a sudden world-wide economy tank and Steam goes bankrupt...say goodbye to your games. Any number of things can happen that will suddenly prevent you from playing your games. Murphy's law, what can happen will happen.

Whereas, the pile of disks I have in my closet aren't going anywhere; nor do they need any type of Internet connection. They are all older games though, before the Internet DRM and DLC things happened. Take Desura for example, unlike Steam you can download stand-alone versions of your game; no Desura needed. I probably wouldn't think about it so much if Steam was more like Desura, which I find myself using more and more over Steam lately.

The Indie Game Developer Community & Unity3D

I agree, and it's what I've been saying. We are putting way too many Eggs in the Unity basket. Developers, please try to be more diverse.

I'm with berarma also, the same goes for Steam. We could be digging our own grave here if these two things go belly up. I've never really been a fan of Unity anyway, it's slow and clunky; just feels unoptimized. And what little of the Unigine games I've played, that engine is very smooth and feels right. I've actually found myself trying not to use Steam lately, I don't like locking myself into anything.

As far as the next Source engine, we don't even really know what features it will offer or how well it works. It's too early to talk about. If it spits out games like Serious Sam 3, then it's not going to go very well for that either. That game is a mess of headache inducing, over-bloomed rubbish.

Quoting: Quote from HamishIs there any huge difference between Worms Reloaded and Warmux?

Probably going to sit this one out.
If it makes any difference, I like Worms a little better. It just has a more polished feel. But there isn't much difference and if you like Warmux, you're probably not missing much.
