The Funding Crowd 23 (Oct 29th - Nov 13th)

Well there's two more must-haves for me this week, SCALE and Deathfire. Somebody mentioned on another article that Deathfire sounds like it was named by a random RPG name generator, but the game itself has much promise. Hope it manages to gain enough momentum to get funded!

SCALE A First Person Reality Manipulation Game Video

Factoring in the end spike from procrastinators pledging and avid backers raising their pledges, the project creator is right to be quite optimistic

I'm one of the procrastinators this time, but plan in the next few days to watch this video and the pitch video then get in a pledge...

ID Software Moving Further Away From Linux, QuakeLive Going Native
11 Nov 2013 at 6:07 pm UTC

Looking backwards it may be tempting to think early id games were not innovative, but really they contributed basic ideas and perspectives that were so important they are now taken for granted... reminds me of hearing a friend comment that the biggest weakness of LoTR was that it tended to be rather stereotypical fantasy :P

Leadwerks Creation Tool Continues The Push Onto Linux

Quoting: Quote from mirvIt also sheds light on why some people might find Linux a bit daunting to develop on. I've always found Linux better to develop on personally, but it's all just what you're used to I suppose.
It's not just what you're used to, but partly your personality. Some of us are allergic to trying to troubleshoot anything involving black box components (proprietary, no source, so frustrating if things don't "just work), and would not be in the software development industry at all if it weren't for open platforms like Linux. That's not to say I've been able to avoid black-box components and tools altogether as a Linux developer, but it's not prevalent enough that I've stopped having fun with all the good parts of my job.

Steam For Linux Has Its First Birthday Today!

Quoting: QuoteLots of games on Steam don't use DRM.
I wish they advertised it on the games' profile.
Interesting to see Valve's own HalfLife & Portal series among those that can be run standalone...

The Funding Crowd 22 (Oct 14th-28th)

I've got over $300 in kickstarter pledges pending right now, but sadly a majority of that might not get claimed :(

At least Pulsar is going to happen!

What the hey, how did I forget PULSAR [External Link] from "Still in the Running"! It still has a couple days to go before moving officially into the "Winners" list.

Speaking of which, any other backers for PULSAR? It would be cool to get one or more teams of GOL members manning ships.

Timothy Zahn's Parallax Turn Based 4X Strategy With Interview!
25 Oct 2013 at 10:49 pm UTC

Timothy Zahn is one of my favorite authors, and I think the community collaboration could be so much fun with the right set of backers. Hope to see more of you over there -- Linux fans are good at online collaboration!
