Quoting: PopeJamalWow. This thread is childish and embarrassing. This is why people are wary of the Linux community. :(and forum threads where Windows users hang out are less vitrolic when something happens they don't like...? Maybe I missed the posts that really embarassed you, but mostly I find GoL members less rude than average internet denizens.

It is interesting to see what distros made it onto their must-support list. I can think of justifications for each, but the inflexibility of refusing to adapt Linux support strategy after collecting more info suggests
* the people making the tech decisions are very stubborn
* they have very little interest in Linux support (maybe their Mac sales are insignificant compared to wndows)
* they are scared of messing up and looking like fools
or maybe some combination of the the above
Some change in market like a popular Steam box could be an excuse for them to re-evaluate, but until then we can mostly** forget about them.
**I've got a few kickstarter rewards that were GOG codes for old games by the same game designers, still need to get around to downloading a few of them with gogonlinux

Quoting: EdgarAnd Gameolith and ShinyLoot and FireFlower... you can even get some Linux games from Amazon and GamersGate. Do we really need to be supported for every games distributor on Earth (and beyond)?A big part of GOG's catalog is classic old games that can't be found on any of the above. If there's no old games you're wishing to buy and play on Linux, then yes it makes sense that you could hardly care less about GOG. Those who are longing to pick up a bunch of classics that are really hard to find anymore DO care. Liam can try to keep the communication lines open with GOG, who knows, maybe something good will come of it someday... hard to imagine anything bad will come of it. People who are sick of hearing about GOG can just skip these posts; there are a ton of other GoL posts every day and we don't really need to read every single one ;)

Broken link for post about Cognition coming to linux, should be http://indiegamestand.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1753#p1753 [External Link]
Phoenix Online have the opportunity to get started on updating some of their custom code to Unity 4 using funding from the Moebius project, since they have re-used some Cognition code in Moebius where it made sense (they are both adventure games after all).

They can't possibly be supporting every Mac and Windows box under the sun
"How about running this Mac game on my powerpc ibook?"
GOG: "No problem, use our highly optimized x86-on-ppc emulator!"
"Can you help me run this game on my win95 classic pentium?"
GOG: "Of course! We'll call in developers to backport it!"
So this policy is a total cop-out -- they just need to define what is officially supported and keep it as tightly focused as their Windows and Mac support, e.g. add Ubuntu as a platform rather than Linux if they are afraid of getting deluged with Linux support tickets and refund requests. Outside sites (e.g. GoL wiki) could collect tips on running on other distros.
Maybe someday GOG will hire enough Linux fans to talk some sense into the management over there.
P.S. gentoo is my favorite distro, so I'm not saying this as an Ubuntu fanboi -- it's just the sensible choice for out-of-the-box support since Valve and Unity already picked it. I have no problem with dual booting to Ubuntu if I can't get something working in my favorite distro!

Porting Games Over To Linux Using Wine

Quoting: hardpenguinWell, my point was, if you'd like to see games like those from this list: http://transgaming.com/cider/games [External Link] - for example Prince of Persia, The Sims, Need for Speed franchises officially released on Linux, this would be the very only way for now. It took some time unless such publisher as Aspyr appeared and started porting games natively on Mac.Wow there's a lot of boring stuff on that list in my opinion (I wish the Sims had never been invented). HoMM V is the only one that would have come in useful to me, since it was pretty painful and buggy running it in plain wine. Linux Steam has way more interesting stuff, and there is going to be a plethora of cool cross-platform games coming out of the crowdfunding scene in the next year or two. I don't think we have much to be jealous about ;)
EDIT:
Here's a short look on Mac gaming situation. Can we compare Linux to this?

Porting Games Over To Linux Using Wine

Quoting: hardpenguinWine ports are a good solution under one condition - they have to work flawlessly. I am actually looking forward to Transgaming to join up, authors of officially released Cider ports (Wine-like technology to bring games to Mac) and developers of not really popular Cedega. We all know that CodeWeavers ports were not perfect (ohh Limbo). But if such huge company as EA could release The Sims or Assasin's Creed on Mac with Transgaming technology, why wouldn't this happen to Linux?I used to have a Cedega subscription back when Transgaming was trying to survive on end-user subscribers more than "porting" fees from the development side -- what recent news about Transgaming are you looking forward to?
