Quoting: BeamboomWhen you only see Macs and Windows around, how do you explain it. How's your take on reality?
Reality is that there are only Linux machines in my home, so surely all the homes in the world only have Linux machines! Reality check!
I admit that my test is anecdotal right in the post that I make it. But anecdotally, if there were more Linux machine on desktop / laptops, I'm pretty sure we'd notice.

Quoting: slaapliedjeI always find it funny when people say SteamOS didn't succeed. It's still being developed. If Valve had officially killed it off, they haven't stated as such, and there are updates to it on a regular basis.
It's still being updated and I use it daily, but it didn't succeed.

Quoting: GrazenHere's a worthwhile mental check (though admittedly anecdotal). Go to a local coffee shop. Look around. How many people are on Windows? How many on OSX or iOS? How many on Linux? Now, ChromeOS might bump it up a bit if it's counted as a Linux distro, but if Linux has surpassed OSX, the evidence would be all around us.
I would think that most of the laptops seen in coffee shops are company issued (=Mac/Windows). I find it hard to imagine that someone would lug around home laptops in public places when more portable options for casual use exist. Then again my imagination can be very limited.
I was in a coffee shop yesterday with my son (we have a weekend homework club) and I'd say 90% were OSX, 9.999% Windows me on my Ubuntu Budgie and my son on his Samsung Plus Chromebook.

I think it isn't out of reach in the case of a zen based apu, if the goal is to run games at medium settings like many actual consoles do.

But it's just speculation. IMO, the day Blizzard port it's game catalog to Linux is the day Linux gaming has won. It's more a dream than a possibility. :)

This said, hardware needs exclusives to sell. That's why Steam Machines failed. There was nothing you couldn't get by other means or on "the other OS"... Let's see what Atari has in store, this time...
The reason SteamOS didn't succeed isn't because of exclusives, it's because games ran worse PLUS lack of compatibility. You can have one or the other and people would go for it, but both is death.

I'm in. What the heck, it's not often that we get a gaming first console launch based on the Linux kernel.

I've been playing the hell out of it, though I haven't finished it yet because I insist on playing veteran Ironman and restarting once my game is "broken". Being patient is crucial and the difficulty level has been jacked up particularly in the middle part of the game.

The only complaint I have is that the Psi-lab can't really be built until the late middle game with the new buildings that are available and more necessary in the earlier part of the game. This means that training and developing Psi warriors isn't necessary or even feasible since you're required to staff them with rookies and train them up. By the time that they've been levelled you're closer to the end of the game, have become attached to the other characters and they don't have any bonds developed. It's unfortunate because I love building a psi army.

The Humble Store is having a huge sale right now, some seriously good Linux deals on

I noticed that a few games, in particular Northgard and Darksiders II are listed on Humble with Linix support but Linux isn't shown as supported on Steam.

Quoting: Beamboomthe rest of us need to wait a bit longer to get "our" mmo, it seems.
I am not aware of any new major MMO being in active development. Not even for Windows. There are a couple smaller projects, but nothing remotely in AAA territory. And since these things take many years to make, I don't think we're going to see a Linux AAA MMO anytime soon. My biggest hope for a remedy is WINE getting able to run Elder Scrolls Online (again - it used to run win WINE even, but they broke it by removing OpenGL support).

Currently, Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars The Old Republic run very well in WINE, so at least we CAN play AAA MMOs in Linux.
SWTOR is broken in WINE unless you can find an older launcher. I've been waiting for a fix for a few weeks now.

Quoting: GrazenTo be honest Liam, posts like this make me want to cancel my Patreon support.
Wow, okay, why? Did I do something wrong?
These occasional reminders are just fine, don't worry about it. Well okay, of course you'd worry as it's your livelihood we're talking about.

If I can make one suggestion though, I'd keep the doom-and-gloom in check. Positive messages work better I think than emphasis on the negative like cancellations. They're on your mind, but they're not what motivates us to support your work. Remind us of the awesome things you do and plan on doing in the near future. That should be enough.

EDIT: typo
Agreed. There's a fine line between 'please support the channel and the work I'm doing' and begging. Your posts sometimes come across as begging and/or the comments about starving or your family or whatever are off mark. We support you for the value that you provide - I don't frankly care about your personal life or personal welfare. I know that sounds harsh, but there's more than enough people here locally for me to care about that I actually know IRL.

If you can't make a living doing this, do something else. I don't want to be shamed into supporting you.
