Take a look at 'The Assassin' from XCOM 2's War of the Chosen expansion

The alien rulers are definitely annoying when they appear randomly in the middle of a mission throwing off your planning. But I don't think that's too far from the spirit of the game.

Part of the appeal of XCOM is that not all missions are winnable - sometimes you have to take the decision to cut your losses and evac the squad. I know I go into most games these days with the mindset of 'win everything.' Playing XCOM in Ironman mode forces me to change that mindset and be willing to lose sometimes and overcome those losses later.

The most difficult thing is that the 'ruler reaction' means they can still get you when you're trying to run - that _is_ annoying (the Frost bomb often helps here). I think Long War 2 has changed that somewhat (but I'm still early in the campaign).

Forcing you to deal more with the unexpected could be a good thing!

Good news, Feral Interactive confirm they are porting XCOM 2: War of the Chosen

XCOM2 is fantastic, and I've been playing through the Long War 2 mod recently, which has great tactical additions. It looks like War of the Chosen is going to borrow some inspiration from LW2 (more classes, resistance management, etc), which will no doubt make for more exciting gameplay.

The style of the trailer is interesting though, it makes it appear more like a Warcraft fantasy setting than the near-future military vs aliens vibe of the past few XCOM games. I'm a bit skeptical about the change, but Firaxis have been doing really lately, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

As long as they're still working on it, and good on them for the transparency! Looking forward to playing the new update.

Thanks for the clarifications, and thanks for thinking of the Linux community!

Quoting: artvandelay440I wonder how Valve feels about this- especially the handing over of credentials to an unknown (to them) 3rd party. Sounds like it might run afoul of the EULA:

[...]

While you aren't selling your account, Snoost is monetizing your Steam account without Valve's permission, and I don't see them liking that too much.
Snoost could argue that it's no different from installing a Steam game at an internet cafe on a machine you're renting (and then deleting it when you're done). Would Valve object to that? I imagine Snoost are storing your login details as a convenience, they could re-work it so that you have to input them every time you want to play a game and they never store it at all.

That seems really expensive, especially considering you have to pay for the game as well (I guess as you say you could save by buying a cheaper local machine, but I already own a decent one!).

Certainly I'd always prefer a Linux port, but this might be a solution for those few unported games which I desperately want to play but won't run in Wine (Planet Coaster I'm looking at you!)

Though at that price point I might as well buy a Windows Licence, dual boot and be done with it!

The awesome looking FPS 'STRAFE' has been delayed, with no set Linux release date now

C'mon, everyone knows you're not a real gamer unless you play Nethack, which you compiled yourself, on a full screen terminal in Gentoo (sysvinit thanks very much) using a keyboard once brushed by the beard of Stallman.

Anyone who disagrees with me is clearly the type of person who values graphics over gameplay.

There's a fork of Wine-Staging that allows you to play Overwatch on Linux, still needs work

Quoting: liamdaweFeral have already done the XCOM 2 patch :), was back in early Feb.
Sweet pumpkins! I was on holiday then so missed the announcement, but in any case figured that by the time I got bored of Civ VI The Long War would be ready for me.

At the moment the only game tempting me to borrow my wife's Windows box is Planet Coaster. But with the recent release of Civ VI, and Feral's promise to patch XCOM2 for the Long War, I should be pretty busy until about 2023. Maybe Wine will have caught up for Planet Coaster by then ;-)
