EA rebrand and refresh their anti-cheat into EA Javelin Anticheat, still blocks Linux / Steam Deck

An accuracy rate of ~99% is pretty bad when dealing with millions of users...
Yup. Sounds like they inconvenienced 330K gamers with false positive bans.

And the hidden headline for me is that Javelin might have a 99% accuracy rating once it's found a cheat, but identifying 33 million cheat sessions out of 2.2 billion suggests that the entire cheating problem only affects just over 1.5% of those sessions!

Dunno about anyone else, but I feel like Javelin is missing some serious action.

EA really is just shit.

@Caldathras:
Good idea. How do you go about blacklisting a developer/publisher? I've never done that before.

It's a pain these days, tbh, and it's creator-dependent sadly. Used to be, you could browse to a game, click on the developer or publisher link, and that would take you to their "creator page", and then you could just "Ignore" them, which would include any future titles.

These days, clicking on those links seems to take to you a list of their games instead, which is a bit of a pain. BUT, you can still go to certain pages manually.

For example, the publisher "505 Games" has this "publisher page" here:
https://store.steampowered.com/pub/505games [External Link]

However, for that to work, the developer or publisher needs to have created their page. And since Valve seems to have retired creator pages (original link here: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/creator_homepage) [External Link], I'm not sure it's always going to be possible to ignore at the creator level.

Which is a pain. Ha ha - maybe Valve DID report to creators that their pages were being ignored, which of course hurts future sales, so Valve agreed to hide them?

Because why address a source of discontent, when you can just put a plaster over and pretend it doesn't hurt? /s

Normally I ignore games if they succumb to Epic Exclusive deals, but I think I'll make an exception for these guys.

Happy memories of playing their first game, one of the very first Linux native games I played, about four years before we got the first taste of Steam for Linux.

Man, I was still dual booting back then, for goodness sake!!

I tend to just blacklist the dev or publisher page on Steam when I see this kind of attitude. No hard feelings, it's just a better use of my time not to see them in future.

But I wonder if the Devs/Publishers realise that the door is getting closed so permanently. It would be interesting if Valve shared numbers with Devs/Publishers on how many accounts have them blocked.

Ha, can you imagine ANY other store (Windows, Sony, Nintendo, whatever) that would allow you to sell your games on it, accessing its insane potential selling power... and yet NOT support that store owners own console!?

I know Valve love playing being the good guy, but sometimes I just want them to put their foot down, y'know?

Honestly, once the new NexusMods tool supports Skyrim, I'll be straight onto my third (or is it fourth) play through and I'll be a happy boy.

I'll pass on this. Not because of the Microsoft boycott for Palestine that's filling up my Bluesky feeds, but simply because Oblivion was the weakest Elder Scrolls I've played.

There's that beautiful reveal moment when you exit the sewers, then a shine of excitement as you uncover the gameplay mechanics. Then the gates start opening and the entire gameplay loop goes on repeat.

You could argue that Skyrim swapped gates for dragons. And that's kind of true. But fighting a dragon is quick and exciting. Meanwhile, slogging through YAOG (yet another oblivion gate) became tedious after the first or second. There's like 25 of these things, isn't there? Maybe it just felt like there was 25 of them.

Also UE5. Also, the price, goddam. Also, no noods.

I only got a couple of hours in last time I gave this a shot, probably about 2 years ago. Time to dust off my trusty HEV and give it another go, I reckon!
