Arma 3 Public Linux Beta Soon, Being Used As An Evaluation
26 Aug 2015 at 5:11 pm UTC Likes: 1

I don't do beta or EA, but I really enjoyed Arma 2 pre-2013 when I still had Windows.

If they do it properly, I'll buy it. But not paying them to test their game for them. Just don't understand the concept of EA...

Looks Like Feral Interactive's Linux Ports Will See More AMD Love
24 Aug 2015 at 8:14 pm UTC

Can't quite make out what the Sapphire GPU is at the back, but given that there's a 980 and 970 in there with the R9 390, I hope it's another AMD card. But "AMD CPUs" is good too. A decent mix.

What Have You Been Playing Recently, And What Do You Think About It?

Mordor got a solid 15 hours from me so far - unlike valczir, I love the combat. You should rarely die in SoM, instead running away at 20-25% health, recouping and trying again. But if you get the combat "just right", you won't be dying much anyway, since you're such a total bad-ass in the game. Even more so than Batman City/Asylum, I can walk into a group of 15+ Uruk and know that there's a solid chance I'll be the last one standing. Hell, there's even a point in the game that puts you in an arena and throws 100+ Uruk at you, around 15 at a time. Magic game. Wonderful.

Otherwise, I'm still hooked on Tales of Maj'Eyal. In fact, at 140 hours, it's nearly competing with my Killing Floor addiction (200 hours). I need to get it out of my system before KF2 is out for Linux...

Finally, it's a straight tie between Victor Vran (epic), Herosiege (epic) and Terraria (epic). All of these are my go-to multiplayer games with my kids over LAN (although Herosiege needs an open port on your router, sadly).

I'm a happy penguin at the moment!

Developers Of Strategy Game Halfway Show Linux Sales & Support Requests
15 Aug 2015 at 3:04 pm UTC

Quoting: Eike
Quoting: scaineQuick calculations, then - they sold 520'sh Linux versions, which generated 262 support requests.
No.
~524 Linux versions sold (26200 * 0.02)
~79 support requests for all platforms (26200 / 1000 * 3)
~24 support request for Linux (79 * 0.3)
So about every 20th Linux sale created a support request.
Ta. I thought that ratio seemed high. I think I entered the wrong figure when doing the support requests, as I'm way off on that.

Rethinking my earlier comment too - I think this game is definitely worth a purchase and I might have been simply distracted by the bigger AAA games arriving at the same time. If you see a 30% sale or better, this is definitely worth your while.

Quick calculations, then - they sold 520'sh Linux versions, which generated 262 support requests. As Fergle notes, a better breakdown of support requests would be good, but ultimately... 520 odd sales? That's pretty pathetic. Five grand to put up with 260 support calls? Terrible.

I wanted to love this game - anticipated it for over a year, soaked up every (scarce) blog post, then when it finally launched, I sank 5 hours into it... and stopped playing. I can't remember why, but I'm fairly sure that it was either XCom, or Borderlands that came along and I just lost interest. That and one of the characters, can't remember who, moves stupidly slowly (he has a heavy weapon, or something) and the fast dude is great... but can't hit jack and when he does, it's for a pittance and he's then blown away. You can mitigate this with various armour types, but the inventory is a bit tedious, and with restricted carrying slots, it sometimes just feels a bit like it's getting in the way of game play. It's hard to keep playing when there are similar, but more accessible games to play (XCom, most obviously).

Considering only 6% (about 1500) players ever finished it, I might not be alone.

Starship Rubicon, A Space Combat Roguelike Updated With A Linux Port, Some Thoughts
27 Jul 2015 at 7:24 pm UTC

Quoting: LinasIs it any similar to SPAZ or Reassembly? I am a huge fan of SPAZ and I am trying to find a worthy successor.
Reassembly was just brilliant. I think GoL covered a similar, cartoony version of that game recently. I played about 20 hours of Drox Operative, but its progression is more down to steady RPG-style progression, rather than roll-your-own-ship type of customisability. Drox is good, but I prefer the more open mechanic.

EDIT: I was thinking of Captain Forever - [http://store.steampowered.com/app/298560/ [External Link]]

We have Ten Copies Of The Fantastic Victor Vran To Give Away!

I'm a good hunter because I bought a four-pack of this a couple of days ago, started it up at 10pm last night for a quick play before bed and didn't get to said bed until nearly 2am. What an incredible game. Absolutely fantastic!

Submerged, A Third-person Combat-free Adventure Game May Get Linux Support
27 Jul 2015 at 12:34 pm UTC

Quoting: KelsOh wow, Submerged might be headed to Linux? I'm totally in! I saw the trailer for this a few months back and it has that Ico vibe I've been wanting for ages now.

Not a Day One purchase though. Cradle taught me not to trust.
What's wrong with Cradle (apart from a tighter-than-it-should-be FOV)? I thought it was getting generally good feedback.

Looks superb. It reminds me of Enslaved, which I loved, from back in my PS3 days. Minus the combat of course.

SteamOS/Linux Version Of Gauntlet Cancelled

Quoting: LinasOh come on, if they want to say PC, let them have it. It is just as meaningless as the whole Linux vs GNU/Linux debate. Sometimes the distinction is important, but most of the time it is not.
In my regular skimmings through Kickstarter when updating the crowdfunding wiki I come by a lot of campaigns with ambiguous platform support statements like "this game will be available for PC". You'd be really surprised how many times the devs really mean "Personal Computer" (i.e. Windows+Mac+Linux) and not only "Windows".

So no, even if Steam does it, "PC" does not always equate to "Windows" and it can lead to confusion.
From the guys who brought you "I'm american" and "Let's play some football".... comes.... "this game will be available for PC"

They just love to do this, I hate specifying that I'm american but not from the US, that's so annoying! Europeans and Asians don't have to do this. And don't even get me started with football, the original football you know? you know which one it is right?

What's with people and taking names for something that's more general and just shove it to something specific, that's what the people who say PC when they intend to say Windows are doing. And I rightfully hate that practice.

Sorry for my rant.
Rant justified! The PC vs Windows argument, in my head, sounds like promising a game for "Europe", then only releasing it in, say, "Germany". Quite rightly, French, British and Spanish (and others) would be pretty upset.

A developer who uses this term deserves nothing but a healthy dose of contempt. You instantly know what their focus is and how seriously they take other platforms.

As for Muntdefems comment, he's bang on that this ambiguity ends up costing time/effort when researching crowd funding - it's bad enough to deal with this kind of vague term as a consumer, but when you're actively involved in digging out facts for news, it's properly infuriating.
