To close the loop on this, it looks like the new shader compiler was the culprit after all. A little 360 of the camera to work through the initial recompilation hitches and everything was back to normal and working fine.

Probably due to Nvidia's new shader compiler. You can disable it with:
__GL_NextGenCompiler=0 wine <game exe>

If the numbers can be attributed to Chromebooks, it's almost certainly because school is starting back up and students, more and more, are using personal Chromebooks in the classroom.

It would definitely make sense for a big spike in the last month.
