Quoting: PompesdeskyDoes simply putting an original game disc in one's PC drive work with the emulator
No. They're Blu-Ray disc, and many PC Blu-Ray drives won't read them. And even if they do, getting the data correctly is still a lot of busy work.

The Journey Down: Chapter Three has officially launched to conclude the series

Quoting: GuestEdit: they should put the game DRM-free on Humble or GOG
You mean like https://www.gog.com/game/the_journey_down_trilogy [External Link]?

Parts 1 and 2 are also on Humble, but part 3 isn't (yet?).

Minecraft: Story Mode for Linux never got released, even though it was “ready”

This is nothing new. Since its inception, going as far back as their Bone games, Telltale half-hearted said they're looking into Linux releases. Nothing ever came out of anything.

Liam, feature request: I'd like to block people directly from a post of their's.

Quoting: TheSHEEEPHonestly, it should just be like on Windows - look in the executable folder first, done.
You can literally already do that in Linux. It's just not enabled by default (because that would be a huge security nightmare.

What you can do is set the RPATH [External Link] field in the ELF binary, i.e. the game dev needs to do that on their game binary before release.

You can do that while compiling, or afterwards with patchelf [External Link]. If you do

$ patchelf --set-rpath '$ORIGIN/lib' ./foobar

you modify the binary foobar to automatically search for the lib folder in its own path for libraries.

EDIT: And I was ninja'd again, great :P

Sounds like Killing Floor 2 won't come to Linux any time soon

Quoting: lucifertdarkWell I just saved myself £20 & removed it from my wishlist.
If you don't buy it within the next 4 days, you're only saving $12, because it's in the current Humble Monthly Bundle ;)

Realms of Arkania: Star Trail, a hardcore RPG with turn-based combat has released with Linux support
16 Aug 2017 at 7:48 am UTC

Quoting: slaapliedjeWasn't it called that because the campaign setting is called Arkania?
Not in the original German it isn't. It's just Aventurien here. That's the main continent, on the planet Dere [1]. Other continents (each their own setting, essentially) on the same planet are Myranor (aka das Güldenland) and Uthuria. There's also Tharun, which is a setting inside a hollow planet (which might or might not be Dere).

The original Realms of Arkania games were never called that in German either. It was always Das Schwarze Auge.

The new edition of pen & paper roleplaying game Das Schwarze Auge, 5, also has a proper English translation again. It's just called "The Dark Eye" [2] now, and IIRC they completely dropped the Arkania thing.

[1] An anagram of "Erde", the German word for Earth.
[2] Which is a somewhat literal translation. "Das Schwarze Auge" would be "The Black Eye", but since that has the meaning of a bruised eye in English, that obviously wasn't fitting. (A bruised eye is a "blaues Auge", a blue eye in German)

Football Manager 2018 release date announced with Linux support once again
15 Aug 2017 at 4:54 pm UTC

Quoting: dudeFinally, FM2018 is officially announced in Germany. It was banned until this year (due to licences IIRC).
The Steam page still says "This item is currently unavailable in your region", and their store says "Sorry, this product is not available in your region".

Which means I can't pre-order it either, obviously, to get that pre-order deal. If it even comes out in Germany at all, that is.

Quoting: lucifertdarkNope, I can't stand football
Well, I hate it too, in real life. Hate the culture, hate the rowdy people, hate the game itself, hate the mess of broken beer bottles, barf and police horse crap on bicycle lanes after a game, ...

I do, however, have fond memories of playing Anstoss and especially Anstoss 2 (Gold), football manager sims in the 1990s.

EDIT: Ah, it seems like Football Manager 2018 isn't coming to Germany. But Football Manager 2019, next year, is. "Great".

Awesome looking mech combat game 'BATTLETECH' has slipped into a 2018 release
15 Aug 2017 at 12:33 pm UTC

Quoting: Sir_DiealotWhile the third game turned out best from a technical point, the story was totally obvious from the start, hence very boring and a hell of a reading exercise.
I for one disagree there. I really loved the story of the third game. Yes, Dragonfall was better, IMHO, but still, I loved Hong Kong. And I also loved the amount of reading, but I generally enjoy text-heavy games (including Interactive Fiction, i.e. textadventures).

Their engine, however, was always a bit wonky. I had several situations where fights locked up, enemy turns took weirdly long and items disappeared. Saving a game took longer the longer you played and was nearly unbearable at the end of each campaign. The save game list also couldn't cope with a lot of save games (I save a lot) and additionally became a complete mess once you started playing community campaigns.

The modding scene was also quite hampered by how it's three separate games in Steam, I guess, with many resources and music pieces only available in one game, but not the others.

Stepping off this tangent, I'm really excited for BattleTech nonetheless. I hope they get their tech in line this time.

(I'd still like to see more Shadowrun games, though.)

Quoting: wintermuteYou don't need to buy any of that stuff to play the game
That's not really the point, though. I just don't want to be a part of a game where there is a social class of have and have-nots decided upon how much real world money they put in the game. I already have that, right here, in the real world [1].

[1] And people who know of my political leanings know that I'm not exactly happy about that in the real world either :P

I don't want a game where there's 10k gold tickets for raffles for lots to build a house in, where you're surrounded by people who pop in to spend $5 to get the "rare" digital item of the month, so they can flip it for more real-world money half a year later (likely to some other person with more money than sense, or maybe with a hoarding disorder), where everything is only about the $$$.

I mean, if you want that kind of game, okay, but yeah, not for me.

You know what would be refreshing? Everybody gets a house. Period. Play the mission, you get more than enough in-game money to buy improvements and decorative items and such during normal play. No farming required. No real-world money required. No real-world money allowed.
