Heroic Games Launcher for Epic Games appears popular with over 100K downloads

I'm not terribly familiar with EA games on EGS (or Steam for that matter), but if they require an extra client (Origin?) for Steam, I'm sure they do for EGS as well.

Quoting: Lofty1. do you have to run a separate client among the Heroic launcher to play games from the EA store ? i.e Heroic downloads the game but then installs the actual client in wine?
Heroic runs all games through Wine, since Epic does not have any Linux downloads.

Quoting: Lofty2. How (if any) is DRM handled, is it any different to the way steam does things with EA game is there any extra layer here or does it just depend on the specific game ? do all EA games released use a DRM layer authenticated via the client ?
Heroic is not doing anything for DRM; whether it sets up Origin like Steam does for those games that need/use it, I do not know.

Quoting: Lofty3. Can i download or get a key from EA account using Heroic and then add it to steam and it show up in my library as a legit copy ( i don't expect that of course )
You can add non-Steam games to Steam, but Steam isn't going to see them as "Steam copies". I imagine Origin has its own authentication mechanisms, which might link to Steam and/or EGS accounts.

Quoting: Lofty4. Can i somehow use the Heroic client to act as a buffer for the EA games that are bought on steam where it claims a 3rd party client is needed ?
No.

Quoting: Lofty5. Is it easy to get proton working with this, instead of just using wine prefixes.
Yes, you can point it at any Wine or Proton instance.

GOG to go through some reorganization after suffering losses

Quoting: Guestit is exceedingly difficult for any PC game store to be profitable unless they sell Steam keys
I know I would be more inclined to purchase from GOG if it included a Steam key along with the DRM-free version, like Humble.

They had their "GOG Connect" program for building up your GOG library based on games you already had on Steam, which was nice, but this would be more the other direction.

They took that out, but didn't they put it back in again?? But hidden somehow? Or is it gone completely?
The custom option allows you to move the sliders around a bit, but they don't have a breakdown for the games any more - they just lump all "publishers" into one slider. Also, there is a fixed minimum for the Humble cut; you can't give all to charity (or all to the publishers) any more.

Quoting: TheRiddickCrytek company announced a year or so back that their engine FULLY supports DX12 and Vulkan..
They have also announced that it supports Linux. I think the proof of all of the above is in shipped games...

If only there was another store for them to sell on, and a way for users to sideload onto their devices. Oh wait...

Linux Kernel 5.15 released, futex2 work to help Linux gaming going into Kernel 5.16

If I interpreted this correctly, the author was saying that the futex2 code is in a Proton patch, not in WINE. He is suggesting that WINE will never take that code, presumably because the existing code is more broadly compatible (i.e. with macOS?). Whether that is true or not, I'm not sure - but we know they also won't take DXVK, for example.

Steam Play tool Luxtorpeda for running games in native Linux engines sees a major upgrade

Instead of launching through Proton it would run it through a compatible native game engine.
A native game engine that is NOT available on Steam, and is downloaded separately; for example, the Doom/Quake games always supported Linux, but there is no Linux support for them on Steam.

So if Team17 is providing you with keys, does that mean they are proactively supporting Proton? Or did you reach out to them?
