War Thunder gets a huge upgrade along with Vulkan by default on Linux (updated)

Quoting: Liam DaweJust curious, how many players here have been seeing regular crashes with a pop up coming up mentioning an "exception"? I see it sometimes within 5 minutes, sometimes hours. Quite annoying.

Not that often. Playing 1-2 hours daily, once every other day.

Understandable, before they introduced EAC, I preferred (Vulkan for Windows through) Proton as well, yet I only play mixed RB and thus don't really have a choice.

Same issue here, yet got it fixed.

When running WarThunder native (without Steam) under Kubuntu or other distros, the window manager doesn't succeed in selecting the Vulkan-window as the active foreground window.

I found the solution here in the WT forum, cf. below TheRiddick, Oct. 26 [External Link]

Hence I run

killall kwin_x11
(and optionally) xrandr --output DP-0 --gamma 0.92

before starting WT via the "launcher" file in //media/USERNAME/DRIVE/WarThunder/linux64

The difference is quite impressive, with OpenGL I got 30-40 fps (20 when flying over towns) on medium settings, now I get 60-70 fps (40-50 over towns) on high with most sliders set to the max.

Thanks for the insight, understood, gonna delete one of my two installs.

Just tried what you suggested on my system:
Running the native Linux version with "aces -forcestart -driver:vulkan", I end up with a black screen as well.

The exact differences between the Linux and Win version are not known to me. To my experience replay/recording options are different, sounds (engines, guns) seem a bit different and flight stick controls vary (i.e. get messed up after every other WT-Linux patch).

Presently I have two separate installations of War Thunder:
1) Linux native: the downloaded and upacked archive from WarThunder hompage with OpenGL
2) Windows native via Proton under Steam for Linux:
Got it by going into my Steam account and selecting/checking:
- Settings>Account 'Beta Participation' check
- Settings>Steam Play 'Enable Steam Play for supported titles' check
+ Settings>Steam Play 'Enable Steam Play for all other titles' check
+ 'Run other titles with: Proton 4.2.5'

When WarThunder started downloading
(for which I chose a completely new Steam folder)
- I rightclicked onto it in my library
- went to:
Properties>General ‚Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool‘ check
(set to 'Proton 4.2.5‘)
- Then the Download restarted, and the Windows version was downloaded

Which after completion in itself - via Steam and Proton - already worked like a charm.
- And then I followed Termy‘s hint and set:
- WarThunder>Rightclick>Poperties>launch options "%command% -forcestart -driver:vulkan"

Which improved the performance even further.

All in all fps in Mixed RB went from 20-50 Linux-OpenGL (medium settings, most effects off) to 60-130 Proton+Vulkan, note: with graphics settings much higher (high, middle visual range of trees etc.), more details and nearly all effects (haze, particles, suspension physics, etc.) on

Well, via Proton it does...
(can't say how things look like on under Windows as OS though)
... and I am still darned surprised how well it turned out, the fps and visual improvement is just staggering compared to what I got used to under the Linux-native version.

Would have preferred a Linux-native Vulkan implementation very much myself but being pragmatic and rather playing than waiting I'm gonna stick to the Protonised-Windows-Vulkan-version for now, just look at that sunset and those gorgeous flames!

Same here. Due to massive lags and freezes with the linux-client after update 1.89 I today first tried out running it through Steam and Proton and then - following your advice - forced the use of Vulkan.
Thus I experienced quite an impressive leap in fps and(!) now possible graphics settings - even on my elderly system.

Much obliged, chaps!

Quoting: sonicThanks for replies. I am big fan of Total War and ancient Rome. I played hundreds of hours Rome: Total War on Windows, then via Wine. Some time ago I bought Linux version of Medieval II because of LOTR mod. Unfortunately mods for Linux version of Medieval worked only with some limitations. So here I am again, Total War with Rome, but without Linux support. Is not better to just play Rome II under Wine than playing Rome mod for Attla under Wine/Proton?
Well, that's up to your personal choice - game mechanics (building trees, families, etc.) and 'historic accuracy' between Ancient Emp. and Rome II differ, there are endless discussions on the web.

But having played the Grand Campaign in AE under wine on my system (see my specs) for two hours now I have to state that large battles (sieges with 3 to 4 armies) get rather laggy, even on lowest details.

EDIT: Vanilla Attila under wine makes an average 13 fps in the benchmark, so there should be not much difference in performance between the Steam Windows version with and without mods through wine.

EDIT: The lags seem to be memory related though, first two sieges I were fine, during the third things suddenly started to stutter, so taking breaks in between should prevent that under wine.

Feral's Linux native Attila on the contrary works alright, yet you can't delve into the late Republic and Roman Empire times...

... or as you have played LOTR mods for Medieval II you just opt for TW Warhammer, which is also at a reasonable discount and has a Linux port - played two full campaigns myself a year ago (Dwarves and Empire) and enjoyed it a lot.

Quoting: sonicPlease tell me...should I wait for Linux version of Rome II few more years or just grab the Windows version?
PPS: Just solved the shader issue - which in my case was dxvk related, rolled version back from 1.02 to 0.94 (under Lutris) - and now don't know what faction to commence with...
