So what if you can play Doom 2016 on Linux now? I haven't finished with the 1993 one yet... :D

What are you playing this weekend?

I don't know yet. So... many... games... now. :)

Thanks to Proton, I rediscovered Castle Crashers through the week, and weirdly, unlike most games I had on the Xbox 360, it doesn't feel as if I only played it a month ago. So I might have a blast on that. Also, without deliberately trying, my F1 campaign (2015, 'cos it was free) is in sync with the real one, so a 25% race at Monza is a distinct possibility too.

I got back into Mount & Blade: Warband recently, even though I know that it'll start crashing eventually, and it's beginning to show the tell-tale graphical glitches so I think that's coming to an end. I might squeeze another few sessions out of it, though. It's one of those games you never hear much about, but I don't know of anyone who plays it who doesn't absolutely love it.

Quoting: DuncHeh. After me saying just this afternoon that Risen works perfectly apart from not saving, it now doesn't start at all. :dizzy:
Try to find the configuration file and reset the refreshrate to 60. Helped the last time i updated my wine version for risen.
Thanks for the tip, but it seems to be at 60 already.

On the bright side, I found my saves. It looks as if it's writing them to one location and trying to read them from another. Which is really strange. Once I get it working again, I'll have to try putting the files I've found in the empty directory I think it's looking in, to see if my hunch is correct. Although it doesn't explain why it's happening.

Edit: Well, I don't know what happened, but it's working now. No updates or anything. And I was right about the saves. A quick symlink sorted it. Issue filed.

Still, it doesn't seem to have broken anything else, although I haven't had time to properly test it all yet.

Quoting: slaapliedjeSweet! Google Earth VR (if you guys have never played with it) is freaking awesome!

So it has an implementation of Street View, but since it's like taking a flat map and making it 3D it's warped as hell, and looks much like the first Silent Hill game...

Also grabbing the earth and flying over it is pretty awesome.
I don't have a headset for my PC, but Street View (and its community-submitted stuff) has become my absolute favourite thing on Cardboard. It's pretty amazing to be able to really look at places you've never been, rather than just see them in photos. It's not even in proper 3D, but it gives a sense of scale and presence that you just don't get from a flat screen or a piece of paper. I'd love to try it on a decent rig.

Quoting: Mountain ManThe list doesn't seem particularly accurate. It claims that Arkham City works perfectly, but I can't even get it to start.
There are about half a dozen reports that Risen works perfectly, but (unless I'm an edge case here) although it appears to save games, it actually doesn't. I've submitted my own.

Quoting: mylkado you think mircrosoft can make wine/proton somehow illegal if it gets too big?
I doubt it, but it could depend on the outcome of Oracle vs. Google. It's a similar situation, except that Wine has been around since 1993 without Microsoft taking any action against it, even though there are already several commercial products based on it. They'd have a hard time explaining why they only began to have a problem when Valve started using it.

Lindows [External Link] was a little before my time with Linux (it was Linspire by the time I remember it) but, as I recall, although part of its marketing schtick was compatibility with Windows software through Wine, the only formal complaint Microsoft ever made against it was about the name [External Link]. (Which they settled out of court, probably because they saw the case wasn't going their way and might actually end up invalidating their own trademark. :D )

Yes, I've seen a few hints of it myself, but... er, your links don't work. :)

Feral Interactive are teasing a brand new native Linux port
27 Aug 2018 at 6:03 pm UTC

Okay, I'm calling it: Shadow of War. This isn't after hours of extensive research. It's actually been in the back of my head for a while, and on a whim I looked up its Wikipedia page [External Link] this afternoon:

The player continues the story of the ranger Talion and the spirit of the elf lord Celebrimbor, who shares Talion's body, as they forge a new Ring of Power
Yes, yes, “fire and steel”, and the Ring is gold. But a forge is usually steel, and the background to the image seems to be gold. Plus Feral did Shadow of Mordor.

Not sure where the star comes in (I'm not a big Tolkein fan), but if I were a betting man, that's where my money would be right now.

Quoting: GuestI guess that's why Quantum Break, Microsoft's breakout, DX12, UWP, Windows Store, Windows 10, Xbox 'Play Anywhere' flagship title is on Steam.

... and I just bought it on Linux, so that counts as a Steam for Linux sale—and it runs flawlessly on Steam Play!!!

"Thanks Microsoft Studios! This looks like a pretty good game." ;)
See what I mean? :D

As I say, it remains to be seen how well this strategy will work out for Valve and, especially, the Linux wider community, but it clearly works.
