Ah. Sorry. Misunderstood the problem. Yeah, it's probably something like that. I'm getting a generic icon in Plank, too. Usually when it falls back to the application's own, it's at a lower resolution, but it's not even doing that.

After leaving Stellaris to download for five hours last night (which, yes, seemed excessive), I gave up and shut down. Loading up the launcher today, it says it's ready to play, although I don't know if that's true yet.

So... yeah, still a bit buggy. Not too happy about the cloud saves either, if they aren't optional. But anything that loosens the headlock Steam has on Linux gaming can't be all bad. Not, as I've said before, that I'm too bothered about Steam, but any monopoly or near-monopoly isn't good.

I love all these free giveaways, but is there anything more frustrating than one of a game you already have?

Sounds interesting. But as you say, it looks like an easy thing to get very, very wrong. I've never been much of a fan of the idea that all games must have Narrative, but I think something like this needs a really strong one to hold it together, nudging the player into doing particular things with the tools at his disposal, and providing a long-term goal, otherwise it's just going to be a directionless sandbox. And, although it's cool, I'm not sure about going down as low as the code level. Again, if that doesn't have some hard gameplay-driven direction, it's just going to end up as Unity's answer to Gary's Mod. (Which is a Good Thing and I'm glad it exists, but it's not much of a game.)

In my head, I can imagine a really cool game in this vein (although not in any great detail, or I'd have made it and be sitting on a big pile of money right now). If this gets even 75% of the way towards that, it'll be awesome. But I can also imagine dozens of ways it could end up a pointless, sprawling, unengaging mess.

That's an excellent point, actually. I just assumed it would be a reasonable ten hours or so, with some replay value. If it turns out only to be a couple of hours long and not worth playing again, I'm prepared to change my opinion and admit Leopard's right. But we don't know yet.

Well, I think the Cultural Revolution and Tianenmen Square showed us all what the PRC is like. What's worrying is that back then we could be confident that western governments wouldn't try to copy it. Nowadays they seem to be taking notes.

Can you qualify that? IMHO the "required user accounts crap" is wrong. I own CK2, EU4, Tyranny, PoE and none of these games forces me to have an account. If I have one I can sign in, but I was never forced.
I find they have a tendency not to sign me in automatically even when I want them to, actually. But that's neither here nor there. The point is that no, user accounts aren't required. I played CKII, EUIV, and Cities Skylines for well over a year before I even set one up.

Oh, come on. I've owned it almost since day one, and I've only used a gameplay-altering mod once (I've used some graphical mods more regularly).

* If you buy all DLC you probably pay for two games (guess).
* If you bought every DLC when it comes out you probably paid for three games (guess).
Nobody has a gun to your head. It's perfectly playable without any DLC. I only have the anniversary portraits and Horizon Signal, which were both free.

But if you do want it, Paradox games are regularly on sale. You can easily pick up the main game plus some DLC for less than the normal price of the game itself. I'm fairly sure I still haven't spent more than £50 all-told on CK2, and I have seven paid DLC packs (plus, again, a few free ones). And almost 300 hours of gameplay, with plenty more to come. When I think back to the arcades, 17p for an hour seems like a pretty good deal to me.

My thoughts? “Harebrained Bag of Holding Inc.” is the best name for a holding company ever. Paradox must be doing pretty well for themselves, which isn't surprising. And yes, both of them have been pretty Linux-friendly recently, so I don't see much of a downside.

I dunno. Seems fairly reasonable to me, and I'm pretty sensitive to price. It's certainly more than I'm prepared to pay right now, but it's not even close to what the AAA crowd ask for these days. I wouldn't call it “crazy” high.

I haven't, but the Retro Hour podcast did a good two-part interview [External Link] with Howard Scott Warshaw about a year ago. Well worth a listen. He does point out that he volunteered to do E.T. in six weeks, even though nobody else on the programming staff at Atari thought it was possible. But yes, the fact remains that they were given that ridiculous timeframe in the first place. Crazy.

Yep. As I said, I expect Notch was very careful with his conditions of sale, which is why it didn't go pear-shaped within six months. But that's also what worries me about the rebranding of the main version and this new “Bedrock” edition: it looks suspiciously like some kind of workaround.
