The space 4x strategy game 'Star Ruler 2' is now open source

I thought I'd give building it a try, expecting no end of trouble and, ultimately, complete failure. But it worked like a charm. It's understandable that they couldn't include the music, although it makes it feel a bit strange.

All in all though, this is an incredible gesture. If only more developers would put the official seal of approval on their “abandonware” like this.

NVIDIA pushed out two new Linux drivers recently with 396.45 and 390.77

Quoting: GuestIt happens on 396.24, but not in the 390.xx series.
It does not happen in vulkan branch: (396.24.02 396.24.10)
Oh, well. At least it's known about. I couldn't find any other mention of it anywhere, and thought it might be my own setup; the words, “hardware issue” were even hovering menacingly in the back of my mind. I might give 396.24.10 a try later.

Quoting: GuestIf you're talking about issues when alt-tabbing and MadMax is fullscreen, then as a workaround, it seems that starting in window mode and then go to fullscreen (i use kwin, and i bound shift+f12 to make any app fullscreen), will solve the issue.
Veering off-topic a bit, but is anyone else getting flickery textures on the NPCs in Mad Max when using Vulkan? Is there a known fix/workaround, or should I report it? I'm reluctant to go back to OpenGL, because the framrate's much more stable.

A new Steam Client Beta is out adding support for PS3 Controllers and many more
20 Jul 2018 at 3:37 pm UTC

Quoting: RhythagorasThis is awesome. While I am enjoying my Steam controller in most situations, there are some games that just play better with two analog sticks versus the touchpad thing. I really do like the Steam controller, but I still think my favorite controller is the DS3. (Have not had a chance to try a DS4 yet, so I don't know if they improved it or not with the latest iteration).
I know what you mean. When I got my Steam controller, I thought I would finally be able to ditch my XBox 360 controller with the dodgy cable, but I quickly realised that on Grid Autosport (and, later, other driving games), I just wasn't getting the times. Even once I thought I was used to it, I was still slower. I think it's a combination of the triggers having a slightly shorter throw and weaker springs. Maybe also the “experimental” rumble emulation not working, too. Whatever, it's fine with every other game, but driving... forget it.

Minecraft 'Update Aquatic' is a huge update which brings the new launcher officially to Linux

Quoting: x_wingI declare myself ignorant of this engine, but I don't like the supported OS list in their wiki: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Bedrock_Edition [External Link]
I don't like the features list. The WinX version is the only one with all of them. What a surprise.

Nor do I like
all Bedrock editions of Minecraft use the title Minecraft with no subtitle.
So, basically, the Minecraft Notch wrote is now the “Java edition”, whilst all the other editions are now “Minecraft”. Note also that there's a list of “discontinued” platforms. You think we don't see what you're doing, Microsoft?

Wow. I've been using the new launcher for so long (a year? more?) I didn't realise it still wasn't official on Linux until now. Not that I play it very often these days, but this update might be the thing to drag me back in. Uh-oh... :S:

Quoting: GustyGhostMojangMicrosoft have so far been unexpectedly supportive of non-Windows platforms with Minecraft. That said, I would still encourage any Linux gamer looking for a voxel block games to give Minetest a try.
I tinkered around with Minetest back when I only had the Xbox edition of Minecraft, but I took another look recently and it's come on leaps and bounds. The Mineclone game (a collection of mods, since Minetest itself is barely more than the basic engine) is within a stone's throw of the real thing, especially with a converted resource pack. Mobs are a bit too prolific and random - you end up with cows, pigs, and sheep all wandering around the same area - and even simple redstone circuits are pretty laggy, but I often forgot I wasn't playing Minecraft circa 1.0.0. The basic “feel”, which Minetest has missed by a mile up till now, is very nearly spot-on.

What are you playing this weekend and what do you think about it?

Hey, just because the weather's nice, it doesn't mean there's no time for gaming, you lightweights. :P

I finally picked up Mad Max in the Steam sale last week. It's nice to have a AAA action game to really stick my teeth into again. I've heard it compared to quite a lot of things, but nobody seems to have noticed the similarities to Avalanche's other series, Just Cause. The basic gameplay loop is the same: take over territory by blowing stuff up or demolishing it with a harpoon/grappling hook. Okay, MM has Arkham-style melée combat rather than JC's firearms, and there aren't any helicopters, planes, or boats, but I'd recommend it to any Linux gamers missing their Just Cause fix (hint, hint, Feral... ;) ). I wish I'd bought it sooner.

Quoting: ColomboI have bought into GAM on release...

don't. GAM sucks.
What Patola said. I know what it is (I've no preconceptions from previous Grand Ages games, for example), and it looks interesting enough to pick up for less than 2GBP bundled with a few other titles.

Quoting: PatolaGreat! I bought the USD 1.99 strategy bundle. It has Space Hulk Ascension and Grand Ages Medieval, which I have been planning to buy.
Thanks for mentioning that. I've been thinking about GAM myself, but probably wouldn't have looked at the bundle otherwise.

Ooh, only 12 minutes left on Surviving Mars now! Nah, still too expensive for me at the moment. It's (or was :) ) a good offer if you have £20 to spare, mind you.

Open source game engine 'Godot Engine' to get an impressive third-person shooter demo
3 Jul 2018 at 2:42 pm UTC Likes: 2

I've only tinkered a bit with Godot 3, due to... well, sheer laziness if I'm honest, but that does look seriously impressive. Someone (not me) is going to make something big with this engine, I'm sure of it.

Not least because I know that, although it's a tech demo, there's nothing in there that's particularly tricky to achieve, other than creating those beautiful art assets in the first place. Given them, I'm fairly sure I could have coded that demo in a few days, and I'm a bloody awful programmer. It's stupidly easy to get the bare bones of a game up and running in Godot. It reminds me of AMOS [External Link] back on the Amiga, in that regard. If anything, Godot's probably easier to use.
