Quoting: slaapliedjeHas anyone tried Proton for "outside Steam" with Launchbox / BigBox game launcher? We need a utility of this caliber on Linux. This is your "UI for Steam Deck that works with all the stores / emulators" check out videos on YouTube. There is a thread on trying to get it working with Wine...

Proton runs perfectly fine from console. I do it with a script

#!/bin/sh
mkdir -p $(pwd)/wineprefix
export STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH="$HOME/.steam/steam"
STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=$(pwd)/wineprefix ~/.steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ -\ Experimental/proton run MonolithBay/Binaries/Win64/MonolithBay-Win64-Shipping.exe

you also can add
export PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1
when you get out of files
Nice, I'll see if I can get that to work... I attempted to add Launchbox in as a non-steam game, got as far as it asking to have .Net Core installed...
Also if you try to run UE4 games which have launcher which installs dependencies (and does not work) try running other exe
usually having "Shipping" in it, usually under GameName/Binaries/... directory. I have managed to run many games this way.

Valve fires back in the lawsuit from Wolfire Games
4 Aug 2021 at 8:52 am UTC

But why lawers even allow such lawsuit to happen? Wolfire Games will just lose money and it is a lawer's duty to tell them so.
As for Valve they do a good thing by a motion to dismiss, they save Wolfire Games money in hope they will sober up.

Well, game engines do have quite good Linux support (engineering-wise) for a while now, but that won't help make people do Linux builds for their games:
- Most developers struggle making multiple platforms release even if it is a few clicks away due to org chaos and lack of engineers in team, many teams having plans about that (supporting multiple platforms) drop all platforms except Windows and mobile very quickly. Games are frequently developed by very non-techy people.
- Many premade assets in stores are windows-only containing blob stuff made only for that platform, frequently decisions to use these drops other platforms support even if originally planned.
- It is hard to support people having troubles on some platform when there is nobody running on that platform, or just one who needs to do more important stuff now.
- Development costs are now increased, so developers need to optimize their processes and drop multi-platform support focusing on single platform (Windows, consoles, mobile) which provides reliable revenue.
- Developers as all people chose path of least resistance, most of times.

That all is nice, just you wait until it actually runs in Linux...

Quoting: TeodosioI think this is good news, Feral ports were usually not very good: lower performance, delayed patches, additional bugs, etc.. The very idea of "porting" smells of a sub-par product.
I like to see *native* releases; it they cannot provide that, ensuring good compatibility with Proton may be better than a port.
Most of Feral ports were perfectly fine lately and I prefer native ports to Proton
because of performance, better behavior and integration. Even if graphics part might be emulated,
the system code written well makes things a lot easier and much less demanding.

Quoting: slapinI think if accused in public one is to fight in public for the silence is considered guilty.
That's definitely true, but unfortunately it can sometimes take months to actually gather all the receipts to prove one's innocence, present them in a coherent way, etc.
Because that's how social media and PR works: Guilty until proven innocent.

In other cases, people are just overwhelmed by the shitstorm and retreat into the turtle shell of social isolation for recovery. Which is a very understandable reaction, only very few people are built to withstand public shunning by large amounts of haters based on mostly lies and misconceptions.
And that is how this whole cancel culture thing works - one can just shun anyone in a minute, no proof needed, and you need to do a lot of work and spend tons of money to clean your name. It is so easy to use and costs nothing.
Thats why the howling mob is so attached to their twitter shitclubs and groups and attack anyone they want with ease basically winning cultural war by shutting up anyone and destroying them, using private company media which is friendly because there is no free speach protection on private media so you can easily win any war just by cancelling appropriate people. As no public forums left, all the opposition oppressed and destroyed the only thing left to do is wait until pendulum will finish its period and will go back moving back focus from corporations to people, to human rights, to humanitarian idea, which are so hated by modern day politicans, groups, activists. Until then we just have to be strong.
