Alexis Kennedy of Weather Factory puts out open letter against Failbetter Games

Well, reading all the allegation it occurs to me that he was quite unfaithfull lover, but still he does not deserve all the cancel culture shitstorm around him. Probably it is not nice to fuck around at work, totally bad for atmosphere, but still nothing criminal and nothing to be concerned much about. Probably some man to man talk would solve the problem.

The Valve Steam Deck, lots of excitement and plenty to think about for Linux gaming

Well, knowing how pessimistic reviewers are, I wonder will it fly...
Also, it is not possible to order from here, no developer programs,
too little to know now. Also basing everything on Proton is not so good
as most porting problems are not graphics APIs per se but other stuff
like threads handling, and other stuff as developers have problems
with many tiny bits especially ones who never seen any platforms
except Windows PC. One of the things is case sensivity, ABIs,
packaging, distributing binaries. Porting graphics APIs in many
cases is placing a few clicks and running a new build, but other
stuff requires manual attention. So I wonder why make a new box
for running windows binaries? I don't see much logic in this
when using dedicated device...

Linux Foundation launches the Open 3D Engine based upon Amazon Lumberyard

Well, it is actually good they have business case there, this will prevent the code from being abandoned.
Currently it doesn't support building for Linux (need fixes for cmake scripts), spent some time but have not figured it out.
I guess they build both Linux and Windows via visual studio or there is some magic. Or Linux support is remnant from Cryengine I dunno. Anyway it is now for strong willed/stubborn people only.

Unlike other game engine reimplementations (OpenMW, openXcom, OpenRA, CorsixTH and so on), this isn't exactly "clean" in comparison which is why it's much more of a grey area.
Just a curiosity, what make it "dirty" in comparison? Is it because of the reverse engineering method?
Yes. Usually for clean reverse engineering, you need a chinese wall [External Link]: those who write the code must not see any original code, including decompiled sources. This is to make sure that the new code is 100% original.

Take OpenMW for instance: they just reverse-engineer the game file format, and create their own engine from scratch to load these.

Here, they use the original binaries, decompile them, and then change the decompiled output to something that compiles back, while cleaning it up (like giving actual names to the variables).
As I understand they created functionally identical code using DLL injection process, which is not the same as decompiling -> modifying. But this process does not create infringing code because it is new and just functionally similar/identical. While not clean room, this process is still legit. This could be still made clean room if worked by 2 people separating decompiling and implementing processes.

Attempt 4 - Collabora sends in futex2 patches for the Linux Kernel to help Wine / Proton
7 Jun 2021 at 8:53 pm UTC

Looks like a giant can of worms patchset, adding new syscalls is for serous heroes. Also there is not point in just implementing futex2, one should reimplement all existing userspace locking mechanisms in glibc which use futex now to futex2 to gain something. Just adding new syscall for wine is not worthy it at all and pointless.

NVIDIA DLSS coming to Proton, plus GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and GeForce RTX 3070 Ti announced
1 Jun 2021 at 1:44 pm UTC

Will DLSS work fine for native games/applications?
I'd always prefer native ports of games as these
give a lot more to quality of life as games are not what I generally do much so I prefer no hussle runs to some real/imaginary benefits from running windows builds...

Well, poor choice of words in the news here as "Open Firmware" is slightly different thing...

It is related to device tree (DT) thing on ARM systems powered by Linux.
