Quoting: sr_ls_boySomeone at Phoronix was looking for a very detailed post by 'i mirkin' concerning the problems with nouveau.
It was a write-up about firmware, VBIOS and overclocking(or the lack thereof).
Yep, pretty good summary. Here is another one [External Link]. TL;DR: just don't use Nvidia ;)

Quoting: Guestone can only hope that nvidia have a change of tune. I honestly doubt it.
Current Nvidia CEO simply doesn't get the point of open source, they aren't any better than Oracle in this sense. Unless their higher management is replaced, I doubt anything will change there. So there is no point to expect anything from them. The best tactic for Linux users is to completely avoid them.

Quoting: RussianNeuroMancerThey don't need Nouveau to work properly, they need Nouveau to work enough to justify keeping certain kernel interfaces in place, to prevent cases like this one [External Link].
Good attitude towards the blob. Kernel developers should have strong push against any special treatment for Nvidia. Either Nvidia works with upstream, or they should get lost.

Quoting: KohriasThey don't even have anything to say to this most basic feature? Nice PR stunt, Nvida!
So far it looks like they are ready to open anything, but the features that are blocking Nouveau to become fully functional. I.e. all that doesn't change the status quo. And surely they won't comment on continuing messing things up.

Improvement, but far from enough to make Nouveau work properly. Nvidia are being their usual selves. Let them open stuff properly like AMD and Intel do, without all this fooling around.

Almost a decade long legal review is a poor excuse for their anti-competitive reasons for not opening things up.

KDE has an unpatched security issue that's been made public

Isn't there some way to disable automatic launching for such files? Autoruns is such an old nasty issue, that it's surprising KDE still has it enabled by default.

Non-linear RPG "Dark Envoy" from the developer of Tower of Time announced, planned for Linux

Since high-quality RPG experiences aren't exactly that common on Linux
I actually thought, that RPGs is one of the best represented genres on Linux both in quality and in quantity.

The game looks promising! Hopefully GOG release is planned (Tower of Time is available there).

A look at how Steam Play is doing, based on the ProtonDB reports from July

That's a huge proportion of AMD GPUs and CPUs in those reports. Different ratio than in GOL stats.

Another SteamVR release is up, further improving the VR experience on Linux

Quoting: EhvisBecause both are not even close to feature complete. In fact, the only feasible way to run OpenHMD on Linux is through SteamVR. And, iirc, the only feasible way to run Monado is through OpenHMD. Slight problem there.
It should go the other way really. OpenHMD shouldn't require SteamVR in any way. Besides, if something is not feature complete, Valve can contribute what's missing.

Valve is totally in favor of OpenXR and several of us have worked on it. In that sense we very much support OpenXR.

SteamVR does not yet support OpenXR in an API sense. You can't run OpenXR apps on SteamVR at the moment.
They didn't answer what they are doing about it though. They very much support OpenXR, but SteamVR is not using it. So what's the plan? That basically was my question above. Why don't they replace SteamVR with OpeHMD+Monado for example?
