Quoting: GuestSo if a game dev wanted to make a Wine bottle of their game using Proton, they could do so, and could release their game on GOG and elsewhere?Proton is too Steam specific. Rather, GOG can continue their practice of bundling Wine with games they want to support for Linux, using patches and libraries that are now available (dxvk, vkd3d, esync and etc.). The good thing is that Valve were doing it right, and contributed things as FOSS and upstream when possible.

But I don't think it's the reason to fear. APIs should not be copyrightable and the bigger the consensus is against corrupt crooks like Oracle, the easier will be to win.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyWe're gonna need hardware that deals with Wayland, aren't we?Yeah. Though my attempts to switch to Wayland using amdgpu so far failed because KWin Wayland session keeps crashing. I suspect I'll need to wait until kernel 4.19 to try it again.

I think this is the major project that Wine developers were working on to fix this: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44315 [External Link]

Performance for multi-threaded games has been greatly improved compared to vanilla Wine. Are these patches applicable to upstream Wine? I'd be interested in trying them out.

Quoting: GuestQUESTION: Once this goes stable, what's to stop every desktop gamer jumping to Linux, especially with bright new horizons like Mesa 18, RADV, and Linux completely smacking the pants off Windows with the new Threadripper?Nothing stops them even now. This just makes it easier for many Steam users. Lower barrier for entry - more potential users.

Wonderful news! And thanks to Valve who funded it and all developers involved who worked on Wine and related tools like dxvk and vkd3d contributing to them in FOSS fashion. That directly benefits not only Steam users but all Linux gamers.

Quoting: FutureSutureUnreal manages to produce better graphics with better performance if used right. Unity just ends up being more limited in general. I'm not sure if that's the reason for certain look-n-feel that the game gives though.Quoting: ShmerlGood that it's releasing, but they really should have used Unreal instead of Unity. Many pointed it out to them in the past. Why do you say that? I am not clued up on the matter, hence my curiosity.
