Google talk about their 'Windows emulator' for Stadia and they use DXVK already

Quoting: tohurAnd if I remember right the Witcher 2 binary was disassembled which uses eON and guess what was found.. mostly WINE related code.. fact is Google can hide this fact cause its on their servers but even for games you are NOT reverse engineering Windows on a whim
That's exactly what I was thinking. Are they building it from the ground up or they are trimming down Wine?

The fact that they are using dxvk and faudio shows they aren't into complete from scratch approach.

Where is the source code for this? If it's not FOSS - it will be a waste of effort, especially if Google will decide to pull the plug on Stadia.

Same as stuff like eON and Feral's wrapping code basically will be lost to history.

Will it be open source?

"Making something new is fun" is a legit reason I have no complaints about, but "debugging Wine is hard becasue we are used to Visual Studio" is kind of a bad excuse.

To use more computing science related idea - "if it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck" (also called duck typing). Meaning imitation of behavior in computing can be seen as equivalence, becasue in the end of the day we care about computation result, not necessarily about particulars of the implementation of it.

I have no issue calling this emulation, it perfectly fits the dictionary meaning of the word.

I don't really see a point in arguments about semantics of dictionary words. I'm not on board with those who try to limit the meaning of emulates without a real reason.

Quoting: F.UltraThe CS definition of emulation is "the use of an application program or device to imitate the behaviour of another program or device", Wine does no such imitation. An application running under Wine does not get an imitated Windows environment except for the file-system which is the single thing that Wine emulates, for everything else the Windows application runs in a Linux environment which have it's pros (performance) and cons (compatibility).
This is incorrect, or at best not a strictly defined idea to claim that you can't interpret it differently. Using dictionary definition of emulation, it means imitation. The rest is a stretch that no one can claim is the only way to stretch it.

Wine totally imitates Windows in some ways. Running in the Linux environment doesn't preclude that fact. These ways include providing ABIs that Windows program expects to behave in the same way Windows does.

Meaning, you can even write a test of behavior, and at least in ideal case of Wine reaching its goal for that particular component, it should produce the same result in Windows and in Wine.

Quoting: mphuZConsumers will remember this, don't worry.
I don't think you get the severity of the situation. Consumers will worry about lack of necessities. Luxuries like games will be the least of their worries.

Quoting: soulsourceTo be honest, I am a bit worried. Where I live (Austria) the politicians in charge are currently considering to ban Russian media. While I don't think that anything of value will be lost in this particular case, it's a slippery slope...
There must be some border line there. To give a more historically felt through example (especially for Austria), imagine there is some Himmler Media Co. running in your country. Does it deserve a ban?

In general it is of course the issue of where free speech ends and problems begin.

Quoting: constI own witcher 2+3 and never really played them. Certainly looking forward to try them again on my deck (just finished the real order *yay*)
Can I just start with witcher3 or should I go back to Witcher1 and walk through the series?
All games are pretty good, so better play them. But it's not necessary.

Quoting: mphuZIt will be difficult for Poles to return to the Russian market. Formally, they will return, but they have lost their respect and fans completely.
I think with the war going, respect for gaming companies in Russia itself should be the least concern for those who dealt with it.

Poland knows well what occupation means. If anything, they'd worry more about losing respect everywhere else for continuing business in Russia.
